We have stayed at Skidaway Island SP a couple years ago and liked it. Great hiking trails and birding!

P.S. Savannah has plenty of things to do. But a short ride down to Brunswick, Ga.,is worth the trip. The Golden Isles

Great city, we go often. Skidaway is nice and so is Fort McAllister in Richmond Hill (lots of nats though..).

My wife and I really loved the 8th AirForce Museum. We spent a whole day there.

Hurricanes " should " not be a problem as late as Oct. Savannah doesn't have a history of many direct hits and by October the season has already peaked, but still possible.

Weather should be nice in Oct. May want to check the web for avg., record highs, record lows. Could be anywhere in between.

Over a year ago, we drove down for the day from Augusta. Went through the Museum, at the Trolley Tour pickup. Then saw Old Fort Jackson and Fort McAllister and drove to Tybee just to eat some fresh seafood and see some gators since we were short on time.

But on two previous trips, we started at the Trolley Tour. We took my mother on the 2nd one. We could get off and on to tour some of the old homes and museums. Great trip for all 3 of us.

My wife and I loved our visit to Savannah. Skidaway State Park is a nice place to stay. If you are into walking or bike riding there is plenty of space to do either. Park is quiet and clean. Tybee Island is nice get there in the morning and stroll the beach it is nice. Arrange to take one of the trolly sight seeing tours. You will park you veh. in their lot and spend the day going around the city with the ability to get on and off. Once you see the sites this way you will be ready to go it alone. Savannah is an old city and therefore has a lot of history. In October the weather should be pleasant, in the summer it is hot and humid. Hurricanes should not be an issue.

We also stayed at Skidaway... great place with plenty of room for a big rig. As mentioned, River Street is a nice place to visit. We took a ghost tour that was very interesting. I recommend that you take one of the trolleys to get a good overview of the area and then you can figure out where you want to go back to visit.
