For your question on NW vs NE Trip, pickup a copy of "Undaunted Courage" about Louis & Clark's voyage. The first 100 pages is background and can be skipped if it bores you, but the rest of the book is great! It took them 3 yrs ST Louis to PNW and back but I think you can be more efficient and get it done in less time;)
This trip will pay dividends for years to come!
