Virginia/North Carolina Campground suggestions

Looking for suggestions on some nice campgrounds. We have been seasonals for about 9 years and just getting back in traveling again. Any suggestions appreciated.

Thank you!

I’ve been going to Hungry Mother on the way north from snowbirding for years.

My main interest is hiking and they a great trail system.
  • If you have a dog, or even if you don't, Four Paws Kingdom in NC.
  • endless possibilities.

we live in nc and have the advantage of enjoying the mountains and the coast. for what its worth from our experience. you mentioned full hookups. most nc and va state parks will be 30 amp and h20 no sewer connect on your site but community dump station. if you can don't let that deter you. va and nc have great parks. we have had no problem having large spacious sites with our 37 ft TT.

    some of our favorites

-- kerr lake state park nc has a good number of water front sites. kerr lake shares nc and va border north central nc

--smith mountain lake state park va south central va

--falls lake state park nc north of raleigh

--asheville area mama gerties rv park. great mountain views

    --outerbanks area
koa cape hatteras/rodanthe ocean front. keep in mind there is a large sand dune on all of the outerbanks so you won't have ocean views but short walk to beach.
frisco woods campground frisco nc outer banks area but this is on the western or 'sound" side of outerbanks. beautiful views of the sound

-- koa new bern nc. located on neuse river great views and close to downtown new bern. small quaint town on the water.

-- wilmington koa no views but well kept and nice size sites centrally located inside wilmington. lots to do in wilminton

--koa natural bridge va. western part of virginia. nice mountain small town area
  • Virginia is about 400 miles wide - narrow it down a bit.

Hungry Mother SP was mentioned and they have a few FHU sites, but it can be crowded, especially around holidays.

All of Virginia state parks are wonderful. Just go to their website and pick out about where you would like to be and go from there.

  • x-2 on American heritage, nice park, or Newport News Park, which is a city owned park 20 miles east of W'burg W&E sites only I think. Williamsburg has both the Theme parks (Busch Gardens/Water Country USA) as well as the Historical sites. Va. Beach is an hour East.

Another Coastal area farther south would be Nags Head/Kitty Hawk NC. Wright Bros Memorial, great beaches, hang gliding from the sand dunes, Lost Colony show in Manteo, and some great Lighthouses. OBX in KItty Hawk and Cape Hatteras KOA have full hookups.

3 hours west John H Kerr Reservoir, a COE lake with both COE and both Va and NC state parks. From there continue west on either US 58 or take I-85 to I-40 To some of the state parks along the Blue Ridge pkwy. Height may limit your 5er, the Parkway has info on its website and maps for areas that may be a concern.
Or you could head back North on I-81

Hopefully this gives you a few ideas.
  • American Heritage in Williamsburg Va. Mayberry campground in Mt Airy NC
  • We would be traveling in the summer with teenagers and a dog. We would need full hookup.
