You have to get to Lake O' the Pines or Wright Patman before the lakes in Texas have near normal water levels. Those around Dallas/ Fort Worth are all very low.

On I-30 in Arkansas - DeGray Lake has several great COE campgrounds and a pretty good state park.

A side trip up to Crater of Diamonds SP is a neat experience.

I personally prefer Lake Greeson a bit north of I-30. Almost grew up at Kirby Landing COE park on that lake in the 60s.

A great park a bit to the north, but not too far out of the way is near Broken Bow, OK - Beaver Bend SP just below the dam on Broken Bow Reservoir.

Ditto on Crater of Diamonds and Daisy State Park
Little Missouri River

I was fortunate to grow up in this area and it is awesome!

If you are going to spend a good bit of time in Texas state parks, you might want to consider getting a Texas State Parks Pass. You can pick it up at your first campground for $70. It waives the daily use fee at each state park ($3-$5 per person per night) and you get four "coupons" that give you 1/2 off camping fees for your second night in a park. It can quickly pay for itself, especially if you are traveling with family.

As PawPaw n Gram said, Lake O The Pines is a nice place. He prefers Johnson Creek and it is nice, but I prefer Buckhorn Creek. Both are nice. Off of I-30 in Arkansas is Lake Catherine State Park. We really enjoy this place. It has some full hook-up sites, waterfront sites. Very nice place.
