Yellowstone - inside park campground recommd 30 ' trailer

We plan to spend a week in Yellowstone next September. Looking for advice on what campground inside the park for:

- accomodate a 30" trailer and our 20" truck.
- can use generators limited hours
- good central location for touring
- not Fishing Bridge
- prefer back in site, not just a wide spot in the road

If you have a favorite site that would be great too!

Right now leaning towards Madison.

Thank for sharing your advice!

Madison is nice you can also see every campground here Yellowstone Campgrounds Problem is that nothing really is central everything is so spread out. Great fs campgrounds near the east "Cody" entrance.

We have done it both ways, and prefer 1 site. The extra driving time is better than having to move one of the days. The mid-day checkin means dragging the TT around the park for 1/2 or 2/3 of a day.

With a full week, I would try to use two campgrounds. The park is so huge you can't do it all from one.

My two would be Bridge Bay and Madison. Canyon would be a great alternative to Bridge Bay. However, I prefer the open sites where you can see a few hundred feet providing better wildlife viewing opportunities.

Haven't been to northeast corner yet but it is on my next trip's agenda.

Madison is a good campground but when we had a 27' TT, we stayed at Bridge Bay. While there we drove around and looked at all the campgrounds including Madison. DH prefers more driving and turning room so Madison would not have worked for us. If you are confident in driving through tight spots and backing into the same, then any of the other campgrounds will work. A lot of folks do it though. Bridge Bay's roads are wider and the sites offer more space between which lends to more backing or pulling in room if you get one of those roadside pull in sites, which we had. There are a lot of web sites that you can preview pictures of the various campgrounds and that may give you an idea.

Here's another vote for Bridge Bay! We camped in the back acres, which has more trees than the front area. There was a mix of back-in sites and pull-throughs. The sites were pretty large. No running water or electric at the site, but there are several deep well spigots in the campground./Best water I ever drank~! The bath houses are basic but clean. There are no showers at Bridge Bay, but you can ride up to Fishing Bridge and use their facilities for a small fee. Nice hot shower in a clean restroom. Generators allowed during the day.

The only negative we experienced was a bison who wandered into our site and peed about 55 odiferous gallons right by the picnic table. :B

I agree on the bison! One evening, I was awakened by a strong smell, I looked out the window and there was a bison! They are 10x stronger in smell than a horse. Wow! We have dogs so when we walked them we had to be careful and walk way out of the way around the bison. What an experience though. I'd go back in a heartbeat!

Here's all the info you need on every CG inside the park. Opening dates, Fees, # of sites, Elevations, Special Features and Notes.
As far as "central location" goes, the road is a 60 mile loop. At any place on it, you're as far away as you can be from another point on the loop.
BTW, September is a great time to visit. The kids are back in school, so the crowds are smaller, and the leaves are starting to turn.
Retired and visiting as much of this beautiful country as I can.

X2 on Bridge Bay. We camped a couple of nights at fishing bridge...it was nice to have the full hook-ups, but we much prefer the "real" camping at Bridge Bay...nice trees/boulders between sites. It felt like a National Park CG. We have a 30' camper and had no problem.

It was a LOOOOONg walk to the bath house and general store. All in all, it i good to move your camps every couple of days and the see the sites around it and then go to the next area....Yellowstone is SO large...45 minutes to places is common.

Ready to go back!

We fit fine in Madison with a 20' truck and a 29' TT.

This year we are taking the same combo to Canyon. They only have 40' sites, but we fit just fine in a back in spot.

I would recommend Bridge Bay; it's a very nice campground with roomier sites-plus you have Yellowstone Lake right at your back door. As to more centrally located......what we found is that there seems to be an equal share of driving no matter where you stay in park, at least if you are interested in seeing a bit of all of it. You will be closer to some and further from others but we thought the drives were part of the adventure; there is usually something wonderful see along each roadway. We stayed at Fishing Bridge because we wanted electric instead of running generator. We toured Bridge Bay and other campgrounds; we agreed that Bridge Bay would be our choice if not using Fishing Bridge. Have a great trip. I'm sure next Sept seems far away but it will be here before you know it!
