Bathroom fan screen standoff

I have the usual cheap bathroom fan/vents that come from the factory in most all RVs, and have had trouble with the fan blades becoming fouled with the screen. I'm sure some here will say that the proper solution is to replace the whole shebang with a fantastic fan, and I've little doubt that they really are quite good and worth the money. However, replacing the fan unit does involve no small amount of work and cash outlay.

I constructed these little sheet metal standoffs to keep the screen away from the fan blades. I used some thin aluminum (a scrap of leftover aluminum flashing, to be precise), but there's no reason other materials wouldn't work equally as well.

A closer view of the standoff:

Since it's not at all easy to see how these are put together from the pictures (it's a tough angle to get a view of with a camera), here are some cartoons that show off my very modest drawing skills. These start out as a rectangle of sheet metal. (The dashed and dotted lines indicate roughly where it gets folded in the next steps.)

The long edges are folded over to put the sharp edges within the standoff and to provide a little more strength. The strength would be irrelevant for anything much sturdier than the aluminum flashing.

Then, folds are made to form a rectangular box shape with the top edge doubled. It would be best to cut little notches or slots in the strips that previously got folded over where these bends are made to avoid extra stresses in the metal, though I did not do this.

Also indicated are a couple of holes, with which they are attached to the crosspiece in the fan/vent unit. I used some machine screws and nuts and appropriate washers. (My first choice would have been pop rivets, but do you think I could find where I had stashed my pop rivets when I went to look for them? No, I could not.)

Thus far, these standoffs have worked flawlessly.
  • Yes replacing the fan assembly will fix this because your replacing the whole thing. Cannot speak of the Heng replacement.
  • Replacing with a new fan won't necessarily fix this - my new Heng replacement rubs on the screen too! Only in the middle where the blade attaches to the spindle. Every couple of days while using it I take the screen off and very gently bend the screen down, but you've given me a few ideas on a permanent fix. Thanks!
  • Thanks for the nice comments. I somewhat wish I had though of or known of the hose washer approach; that's simple and quick and inexpensive and probably would have worked fine for me.

As I wrote, I have no doubt that replacement fans are much better and well worth their cost. That said, $150 or $200 (for my two fans) is not a trivial amount of money to spend. The existing fans are adequate for my occasional exhaust fan needs; I'll gladly spend gas and campground money before better fan money.
  • I took mine out recently needed resealed on the roof anyway Camping world had a fantastic fan on sale for 99.00 bought one just a 3 speed nothing fancy. I am a lot happier with it.
  • Just as diveman 52 said, I replaced mine with a vortex replacment insert fan. You take out the old fan and this fits in the space with a better fan. You can get a single speed for about 70.00 and a 3 speed with reverse for about 135.00. I did mine and they only had the single speed but what a difference it made. Just check them out. A good alternative to replacing with a expensive one that you have to mess with the roof.
  • Why not just replace it with a way better unit?
Best thing I did to my past rig.

It actually works as compared to the one you have
  • I put 2 garden hose washers between the screen and the operator. That worked too.
  • I see nothing wrong with it and it is definitely cheaper than a new fan.
