Thanks for the nice comments. I somewhat wish I had though of or known of the hose washer approach; that's simple and quick and inexpensive and probably would have worked fine for me.
As I wrote, I have no doubt that replacement fans are much better and well worth their cost. That said, $150 or $200 (for my two fans) is not a trivial amount of money to spend. The existing fans are adequate for my occasional exhaust fan needs; I'll gladly spend gas and campground money before better fan money.
