Learning RV Renovation: General Questions?

Hi Guys, for one of my retirement projects I like to play with older RV's and one of the things that really bugs me (I'm sure I'm the only one right?) is the 1970's & 80's cabinet and wall surfaces.
I hate that wood grain veneer and that hokey bathroom wallpaper. At least I think it's wallpaper.
Here's my question for today. Is there anything available in todays market to cover cabinet or wall surfaces such as perhaps a thin plastic type coating or sheeting? Maybe our modern day wallpaper even???
Just wondering what the possibilities are in terms or remods without tearing the whole thing out in most cases...

Thanks, I think half the time she encourages me to start a new project just so she can pick paint colors and decorate:B She does a great job making my work look good though.

  • We painted our walls and cabinets almost 2 years ago and they're holding up well so far. We cleaned everything, primed with Bullseye and painted. We have a tour video posted if you're interested.

  • A lot of people do it with paint in modern fresh colors. Pale gray is the current favored neutral for walls. White cabinets, gray/black/white patterned fabrics. That sounds drab, but all it takes is a little pop of bright color in the fabric, plus a few accessories like cushions or curtains to pick up the same or compatible brights.

From what I've read, surface prep is critical to a good paint job. Re-glue any loose trim strips or wallpaper. You should be able to get those beautiful (not) borders off pretty easily.

Wash with a solution of TSP to remove dirt and grease. Sand very lightly with something like 100 grit paper. Then wash again to remove sanding dust and more dirt. Use 2 coats of primer, then probably 2 coats of the decor color.

I've done a fair amount of reading---if you google "redecorating RV" you will get lots of info. Also, make a Pinterest account to keep track of ideas from other sites. (Your wife or granddaughter can show you how to do that, LOL.)
  • Welcome, you know retirement is not for everybody!

I just wallpapered my 94 Toyota. Knowing nothing about wall papering I scoured the net for info and came across a retired wall paper hanger who was an RV'er.

The existing wall paper in mine is not wall paper and does not need to be removed. It does need a good cleaning with Trisodium phosphate and bleach. Nasty stuff wear rubber gloves and eye protection.

Next prime with Romans 935, pricey but is what is used to wall paper over glass or ceramic tile, difficult surfaces.

He prefers unpasted wall paper, I used pre pasted, my choice.

It is a tedious job, takes lots of patience to cut around windows and such and get them right. Would be much easier to remove trim rings.

I had some problems over working the paper and ended up with some loose seams by squeezing too much glue out. But they have a adhesive for that. Good luck
