Norcold fridge, add dial control temp (mod)

When I first got my RV, I was so baffled that there is no dial control or temperature control in the fridge. It seems strange to me that they would bother making a fridge without a temperature control.

Has anybody tried this thermistor mod to add a dial control to a Norcold fridge that doesn't have one?

Articca RV Thermostat Kit -- add dial to fridge
  • I've never seen a Norcold that was non adjustable- I suppose if you wanted the fresh food compartment to be below freezing, it would be handy, though I certainly wouldn't depend on using it as a freezer.
  • I did both, snip the tip and added a fan to the fins. Fridge seems to stay in the mid 30's from top to bottom with I icing. The building I store my camper in has power so the fridge stays on all summer

  • I added this before my last trip:

    Internal Fan Mod

It seems to work well. I have a thermometer in the fridge and noticed the thermometer showed below freezing most of the trip. I started worrying about freezing liquids but nothing ever froze. I'm not sure why things didn't freeze.
  • Non-adjustable thermostat fridges have been around for several years for both Dometic & Norcold. Factory pre-set with sensing from thermister.
Moving thermister would cause 6-8*f overall change in temp in food section.

Snip-The-Tip Kit (Dometic) has been available for quite some time prior to the one for Norcold

Both are an adjustable rheostat that uses the OEM wiring to lower circuit board.
IF wiring/connections are good then replacing tip works.

Pre-set thermostat should cool freezer to 0*F and food section to 38*F.
Thermister when properly placed on fin should not need further adjustments.
Rheostat control or sliding clip on fin accomplish same minor adjustment of temp
  • My old Norcold had temp control knob at the bottom of the fridge
I think it all changed when the MFG stated using top mounted electronic control boards
  • Don't know about the Norcold, but very interesting product. Googled up to see if one is available for a Dometic as an add on, and it is. Leaving on a trip for two weeks, but when we get back, it's the first thing I'll be ordering to replace the "slider" type thermister on mine.
