Refrigerator door travel lock

I switched to a residential refrigerator and needed a way to hold the door shut. I came up with this. It screws into a threaded hold where the hinge would mount if the doors opened the other way. The foam is a piece cut off a pool float.

Great idea, similar to my latch which also reuses the existing screw holes in the front opening of the fridge.

The difference with mine it is a slide latch that stays on the fridge between the two doors.

Went to Home Depot and searched for a slide latch the was small enough to fit between the doors then made some shims and a bracket to get the position just right.

Note, the pop up button is to prevent the slide from moving while traveling. That button was part of an defunct electronic gizmo that was a spring loaded contact. Most likely not needed but I was making sure the doors would not pop open while traveling!

Somewhere if I can find it I have a picture of the latch on the fridge.. but right now I am not sure what folder it is in..

I put on some Velcro until I could make some time to go get the threaded rod for it and try a similar idea. I never took the next step because the Velcro worked fine.

Way to go, tngw! I think I'll go get the stuff and do the same this weekend.

I have a very low-tech fridge door lock -- a piece of velcro. I used self-stick dots on the door and the frame, connected by a strip of velcro. It works fine, but it is not elegant. TNGW's method is better, I think.

Good idea, and it looks like it should do the job just fine.

Now to install a storage tube or magnet or something in that empty panel above the fridge (if you have one there) to stow this latch thingy when parked. It's so much fun to plan other people's weekend projects for them! :B
