Screw Mount TV Here

I'm going to mount a 14# LED TV in the bedroom where the wall has a label that says "Mount TV Here". So the question is what kind of screw?

I contacted Dutchmen and they said "The walls are not quite 2”, the screw should be shorter than 1 ¾ to avoid going through to the outer wall fiberglass and with the unit being fiberglass there would be aluminum strip type backers not wood."

But what kind of screw? Should it be a #6, #8, #10? How about what type? Should it be an self-tapping aluminum? Are anchor bolts preferred? Maybe drill a pre-hole and use fat wood screws!

Anybody that's mounted a TV to the label "Mount TV Here" please let me know what you used. Thanks....Bill
  • The screws only need to be a little longer than the thickness of the mount and paneling. A 1 3/4" screw isn't going to get a better grip than a 1" screw if both are through the aluminum.

Use sheet metal screws, the threads are deeper and as large a diameter as you can get if it's going into thin aluminum.

My backer was steel (thin). I used a magnet to map out the size of the backer and made an oak board to match the size. Mounted the board to the backer with 9 screws then mounted the tv mount to the oak board. I was afraid 2 screws into the backer would not be stout enough. I used self drilling counter sunk sheet metal screws. Probably #6 size. Hope this helps........

Great idea, that's what I did. 1x8 redoak. It's solid as a rock.
  • I would ask the same people you talked to about the mounting area for the screw size. If that isn't possible:
Glue with liquid nail a 1' square piece of 3/4" plywood to the surface and use whatever size screws you want to mount to the plywood.

I've only seen one and it was a flat board behind the laminated wallboard... This was a 2009/10 model I think... It also had wood supports and the back board ran between two wood supports.

I guess there is different ways to do it???
  • Don't think a laminated wall will have a thick board in it. Mine was just a piece of sheet metal. Wood framed trailers are a different animal.......

Behind this wall where you see this sticker is probably a large 3/4-inch or 1-inch THICK flat board. You should be able to tap on the wall and find the boundary of the back board. The one in my trailer went all the way across the wall in the bed room. Everywhere I tapped was solid... If the back board was not there then all you would have for support would be the 1/4-inch thick plyboard stuff which will not support anything as heavy as a HDTV. It will pull out the screws from the weight..

You can use standard wood screws to attach your HDTV wall mounting bracket. AT least four screws should be used..

Your HDTV wall mount probably comes with screws for you to use. I think mine did...

I got my HDTV wall mount from WALMART where i got my 22-inch VIZIO HDTV. One point is you may want to pick out a HDTV wall mount that also pivits up and down. My VIZIO TV needed to be tilted down some as well as left to right for me to see the screen better. WALMART had a full selection of HDTV wall mount that fits all of the different four screw mount on the back of the HDTVs...
