Winnebago class C - power supply for backup cameras

Hi ,

Unhappy with the attitude of the camera installer who wanted to charge $250 to install the backup camera, I decided to do it myself. I was under the truck for 2 hours wiring the video cable. I was surprise to learn how easy it is to run the cables . The only problem I have is to find the 12 volt positive power cable (the one that provide power when the car is on). I didn't want to cut the cables to test so I ordered the multimeter tester(it should be here on Monday).

Does anyone know if there are any non-contact low voltage tester (for automobile) ? If you have done wiring your Winnebago class C , what is the color code of the cable that provide power (+) when the ignition is on ?

thanks
  • I don't think there is a no contact 12 volt voltage probe. I seem to remember seeing one a few years ago but now I can't find one. I bet it didn't work well and was discontinued. Even the 120 V AC ones aren't perfect and their signal must be hundreds of times stronger than for 12VDC. Sorry, I can't remember the colors. It is possible to stick a sewing needle into the insulated wire to check for voltage.

I like the idea of using the hitch wiring for an outside camera. Your rig should have the wiring even if you have no hitch. On my Ford, the hitch wiring goes back to where the end of a van would be, some distance from the end of the MH. There is a connector there; easy to stick a multimeter probe into. Mine has a plug into the connector to supply power to the house batteries. I would solder onto the wire rather than buying a plug to fit the connector.

On the other hand, a new wire from the fuse box could go through a switch in the cab so you could conveniently switch the camera on/off. I do that a lot - my camera is inside, looking out the back window and hooked up to the house DC panel.
  • I would bet you have a vacant socket in the vehicle's fuse panel. Wire to the non-powered side of the vacant slot and install a fuse.
  • Buy an "add a fuse" for your fuse box, that would allow you to add a fuse to a circuit which is hot when there is ignition. You will probably need the power close to where you mount the monitor for the camera and the fuse box should be close by.
  • Do you have a trailer hitch, can you use the 12 volt power supply in the connector so you do not have to run a wire?
  • Any store that sells electronic equipment will have a small mutimeter if not get a small 12v light bulb and a couple of short lenghts of wire attached or soldered to the light bukb and check for power.
