2500 HD hitch question

When I exit the office for the last time on October 1, 2017, I want to have everything ready so we can hook-up and leave. So, I'm considering buying a new hitch this summer and check that off the list. With our current 2500 HD - 6 1/2 foot bed, we have a Reese Slider, the new 3500 - 8 foot won't need the slider. The truck happens March 1st, 2017. The hitch will be a Curt Q16

With the extended pin box and clipped corners on the Jayco Cap, will I regret giving up the slider too soon? I rarely "have" to use it but have when I want the trailer to react quicker when backing up.
  • OK, I'm only guessing, but I assume that the Q16 means a 16K Hitch, whether you buy now or later, I would go with a higher rated hitch because as others have commented you may have an entirely different and much heavier RV by retirement time.
  • Tegue96 - the new hitch with jaws would be an upgrade from the current slide bar style so it would be a nice to have decision. So far as mounting goes, the grunt work is installation of the rails and frame brackets which wouldn't have to happen today for a new hitch. The hitch itself would drop into place so no real wasted effort today.

Minnow - I'm looking at it as only 2 summers to get it all taken care of cause 30 months just sounds too damn long and depressing.

Old duck - very close. My actual is 9/22.

I do see the risk of something changing on the future TV or rig which would upset planning. I mean maybe we'll finally get those jet packs that were promised in the 70's and the whole game changes.
  • AUwing2, our freedom dates are close, mine is 9/18/2017, my birthday. The best presents are those you get for yourself.

I vote for waiting to make a hitch change with the new TV unless you have to before.
  • It's great you are planning for the future but really, Oct 2017 is 2 1/2 years away. A lot of things could happen between now and then. Who knows, you might not even have the your current trailer then. I'd put whatever money you are going to spend on a new hitch into the bank and wait to see what October 2017 brings.
  • Really? Over two years to get ready. If there is nothing wrong with your current hitch, why not wait and install the new hitch in the new truck one time, instead of re-installing. Then you have new truck and hitch.
  • I have an '02 Duramax with a 6.5 bed and a Huskey 16K Slider since '03. It's never been used. My former '01 Cardinal and my new '15 Cedar Creek Silverback don't require me to use the slider feature at all. The Silverback has the clipped corners though.
  • Only you can really make that decision because you know exactly what you want. I can tell you that if I didn't have to have the slider I wouldn't. Way heavier to move in/out of the bed and what not. I have a slider in my 6.5' bed 2500 and have never needed to use it. Regret buying it but at the time I wasn't sure if my 5er would clear and I got a great deal on it. That being said if I ever need that slider it will have been worth all the hassle it's been up to this point.
