A Little More Tech Help

When I purchased our present truck, I put in Prodigy controller. Have been very happy with it and the truck. I know that Ford started putting a controller in a few years ago ("time" based, I think) and it seems that Dodge is doing the same now. I would assume that Chevy/GM has or will follow suit. My question is, are any of these controllers "proportional" or are they all "time" based? Just wanting to know. Thanks and,

Happy Camping!
  • All 3 makers are using a proportional based IBC and all work well. My Ford IBC works regardless of speed so not sure why Roy is having an issue. I do believe the system does not lock the brakes up at slow speeds (less than 10 mph) but it does still apply braking.

It does have one feature however which makes me wish I still was using my Tekonsha Prodigy.

It seems the Ford version is well integrated into the truck electronics and one feature monitors the speedometer. When the speeds drops down lower than 10MPH the Ford model Brake controller does not send braking signals to the trailer electric brakes when using the brake pedal. This is really evident when stopped at a incline at a stop sign. Only the truck brakes are applied when pressing down on the brake pedal. I always liked the idea the trailer brakes were locked down as well.

There is a benefit to this design. When caught in traffic and sitting at long traffic lights with the brakes on to keep from creeping, you're not sending current through the trailer brake magnets for long periods of time, nor (in the case of electric over hydraulic disc brakes) are you sitting there with the hydraulic pump running for extended periods to apply the trailer brakes.

I too always had the Tekonsha Prodigy II proportional brake controller in my trucks until I got the 2010 Ford which had their built-in model.

The 2010 Ford BRAKE controller works very well for me stopping my trailer.

I can over-ride this bad feature for me by using the controller slide lever. Makes me lean over and use the manual control alot when on trips.

  • Thanks. Will keep all that in mind if and when we need a new truck. Hoping to keep what we have going until we no longer are able to camp or pull our "5th" but that may be asking too much. Will see.

  • Ford's IBC is proportional as well. I also had a Tekonsha Prodigy in my old truck and these are way better.
  • Don't know about the others, but the Dodge is proportional. The harder you step on the brake, the more braking action you get. It does not rely entirely on inertia.

I had a Tekonsha Prodigy in my old truck and it worked very well, but the one in my current truck (2013 RAM) is far superior. (OEM)
