Auxiliary fuel tank under bed cover

FIRST - I made sure to get an RDS tank that was lower then my bedrails. My 40 gallon tank/tool box combo is 1 inch lower. Also, I have heard they will build custom tanks - but they have MANY different tanks and tool box combos. I don't believe Northern Tools shows all of them - go to the RDS website and look around.

Then I went looking for covers. Never could find a hard cover that would work for me. So I started looking at soft tops. Came across the Truxedo Truxport and had it installed. $300 installed in 2013. I am very happy. No clearance problems and very weather tight. Can only be opened after opening the tailgate.

Now a Happy Camper !. Highly recommended.

The thing is - YOU need to do YOUR homework!..;)

There's PLENTY of options that will fit in your bed under almost any tonneau or bed cover!

It all depends on how much fuel you want to carry -vs- bed space sacrificed.

Do you want a true aux tank (plumbed) to your main tank -or- a reserve
which can be pumped into your main tank - or gravity fed?

Is the added weight an issue (for you)?

How much do you want to spend?..:@

Suggest you get a Northern Tool catalog and look at the (many) tank options and dimensions.

And of course - there are auxiliary tank companies doing professional installations to extend your range.

"Iron butt" is not really my "thing" - a stop for fuel after 350+ miles on my factory 35 gal tank is just fine and fits in with stretching my legs & a lavy call.

Consequently - for me - one of the 18 gal RDS tanks is "just there" as a reserve.......which I rarely "tap into", if ever.

BTW - RDS did a custom 50? gal tank featured in one of the mags, which was the *full* width of the truck bed and only about 8" wide.

Yeah - the filler on that one was taller than the top of the bed -
but you could have a "revised" model - - for a price...:W

The transfer Flow 50 gal should fit under a roll up cover or a flip/fold cover. Check the dimensions on the link that Pipeman gave. The 50 gal says 14-3/4" H+ 3" for the fill neck, so 17-3/4" H.

If you want a retractable cover, like a Pace Edwards Jackrabbit, look at the Transfer Flow 37 gal. tank designed to fit that application.

A Jackrabbit will give you better visibility out the rear window (for hitching, etc). It locks in place every 12" to allow partially closed use. Transfer Flow uses a computer controlled pump to transfer fuel (instead of gravity flow and a check ball), and accordingly cost more.

I have had one of these for the past 6 years. It has worked great and the install is not that difficult. I know. I did it.

I also have a Truxedo roll up cover and my Transfer Flow 50 gallon tank fits under it just fine.

I feel your pain, when I decided to cover my new truck I didn't want to have to change or give up using my RDS tank either.

My solution was to carefully cut a hole in the cover and reinforce it. I bought some material that looked like the same kind of material my Truxedo top is made of and glued a piece on the outside of it and the inside around that hole hoping that would help reduce the threat of a rip or whatever from the access hole. So far so good, I just installed it a few months ago but it looks like it's going to work out.

I have one of these. It's a 50 gallon one with a computer that automatically fills the main tank when it drops down a certain amount. It fits under my tonneau cover easily. This

I use a 62 Gal RDS wedge gravity feed tank with a Access Original model rollup tonneau. This is my second truck with that combo. The cover clears the top of the fuel cap by about 1/4 inch. The Original model has 1 1/2" high rails that the cover fits over. Extremely happy with both...

We have the RolBak G2 locking hard cover. We have a 45 Gal RDS fuel tank. The RolBak canister sits directly behind the cab, and the RDS tank fits under it and behind it. The aux tank is L shaped. We have room for a tool box behind that, with an AirSafe air hitch, and 2 Honda 2k generators. When the hard cover is closed, everything is out of sight.
