Brake Controllers: Primus IQ vs. Prodigy (original)

We have two brake controllers (the second came with a used truck we just bought) and I'm trying to decide which I should use.

One is a Prodigy (the original, not P2 or P3) and the second is a Primus IQ that we'd previously used to tow a rental TT with my wife's Pathfinder. Which brake controller is "better"? On paper they look pretty similar.

Our trailer is a 13,300 lb (fully loaded) twin axle, electric brake Palomino Sabre. The truck is a 2008 Dodge Ram 3500 4x4 Laramie quad cab, short bed. As I mentioned above, the Prodigy is already installed in it.

Thank you,
Jason
  • I'd just use the Prodigy, unless it doesn't work. Save the effort of wiring the Primus IQ for the Dodge. Been using a Prodigy since 04.
  • I have both. They are identical internally. Neither has an advantage over the other. I like the looks of the Primus IQ better but like the break over ride on the Prodigy better but either is great.

Make sure your Primus says Primus IQ. If it’s just a Primus it’s not a Prodigy twin. The original Primus had a manual pendulum that you had to level. I was not a big fan of the original Primus but it worked well once set up.

    Thanks!

  • If Prodigy is already installed I’d use that one. Seem equal otherwise.
