Buy a 50 Amp Sp for a 30 Amp rv?

Hey guys, I have been contemplating buy a portable Surge Protector for our 5th wheel. We currently have 30 amp service but I am looking to the future. Next 5th wheel will be larger and probably will be a 50 Amp unit.(2 air conditioners)

My question is could I use a 50 Amp SP for a 30 Amp rv using a 50 amp to 30 amp dogbone adapter? All ready found our next 5er and would have it next week but the boss isn't on board yet. LOL

Any way is something like this even possible? Obviously, I have been looking at a portable unit. Probably a Progressive Industries model.

I can't fix the problem if it belongs to the campground, but I can protect myself from it..

Looks like you have some good answers but...

If you can don't just think 'Surge Protector' but consider, and I recommend highly, the Progressive Industries Portable Electrical Management Systems (EMS)...EMS being the key.

Thanks 2oldman, I thought the question might have been asked before but I guess I didn't use the right search terms because it never came up.

And thanks for your response djousma.
  • You could do that, you would have to have two adapters if you are plugging in to a 30A post(30A male, to 50a female). If the site you are on has 50A service, you could plug the PI in directly, then the 50a male->30A female adapter on the output to plug your RV into. I bought the 30A male->50A female and 50A->50A extention adapters from PI when I bought the surge supressor. A little pricey, but they seem to be bad well. the 50a-50a extension is something I use a lot. The PI has the cord going in to the middle of the unit, most power posts I plug into do not extend out very far, and without the extension, the surge suppressor hangs at a really funny angle. The other thing I have been doing is using a bungee cord to wrap under the surge suppressor and up over the power post. The unit is a little heavy, and with all the weight hanging on the plug, it wants to start to pull out from gravity.
