Campground motorcycle restrictions?

Hello all - new member here. I'm on the verge of buying a 5th wheel TH and was told just today by a RV salesperson that I should verify how many campgrounds will allow motorcycles to be ridden to & from campsites. He says he has ran into several that forbid them inside the camping area.

My main reason for getting a TH is to take my Harley along with me and the wife as we tour. If that's not a practical expectation, I need to reconsider my RV choice.

Thanks in advance for any feedback!

We plan to full time in a toy hauler with 2 full sized Harleys, so that's not an unusual expectation. There are many campgrounds out there so if one prevents you from riding your bike, a definite call ahead to check, then it would be time to drive on down the road as there are many more to choose from! Those are probably narrow minded owners anyway thinking that all Harley riders rev their engines and raise heck when that's not always the case!

I have seen lots of campgrounds with noise bylaws but none with motorcycle bylaws. If its a quiet/legal bike I don't see the problem. If it's loud it shouldn't be in a camp ground, or for that matter on the street. Noise pollution is...well...noise pollution.

So... You will be taking Myrtle Beach off of your list. Not just
OL.

I wonder if the State Park would be ok with motorcycles. I didnt see anything on their website about specifically not allowed. Dont ask, Dont tell. Easier to ask for forgiveness then ask permission. All that kinda stuff.

South Carolina state parks DO permit motorcycles..

I stayed at Myrtle Beach state park in December 2015.. no issues with motorcycles... 4 bikes were in the park then.
January 2016 spent the month in Huntington beach state park .. no issues with motorcycles...
February 2016 spent the month at Edisto beach state park with motorcycle .. no issues... but Edisto was damaged badly by a hurricane last summer.

fyi.. a HD dealership is across the street from Myrtle Beach state park

I do not ride a HD.. but was welcomed...

A couple of clarifications are needed:

Just because the Harley came from the factory as a legal street machine doesn't mean that it still IS. Many are not legal after modifications......and it is THOSE who cause the problem.

The AMA does not condone nor defend illegal noise modifications to bikes. Quite the contrary, the AMA was formed to counter the "outlaw" motorcycle culture......in part.

Maybe, my bike is a registered motor vehicle with no after market modifications. I don't want to leave it unattended out from of a campground nor do I ride it around like a bicycle in the campground.

If I do go to myrtle beach I will be selective if I do choose to bring it, but I always ask campgrounds prior to making a reservation if I am bringing the bike along.

Honestly I don't blame you. IF I had a bike, I would not like to leave it at the gate either. I was just stating the rules they have. As I mentioned. Apache could be the only private MB CG that may let you have your bike inside.

As for the state park. I crossed that off my list a long time ago. I like to be right on the beach, and the campsites at the state park are a good long walk to the beach, and most do not have full hookups. While I don't need full hookups in the mountains. they are a requirement for me at the beach.

I am an "enthusiast", and I am able to enjoy them with stock silencers. I wish others would do the same. I don't blame the property managers for the ban. It seems that only the riders of the loud bikes want that earsplitting cacophony. Maybe they are already deaf. It's unfortunate for the riders of the quiet bikes that the property managers won't just ban the loud ones. Sorry for the rant. This is one of my hot buttons.

well said but even the straight pipe bikes can be ridden quietly if you're not an a hole.

My Dirtbike if I'm not on the track has to be 96 decibels to ride in the dez. Just saying!!

I would agree. Your Harley is a licensed street operated vehicle. Barring access is discriminatory, something AMA likes to fight. However since its private property they can do as they wish, then that's the campground to avoid and let everyone know how bass ackwards they are.

I have had my HD to many CG's. Most I have heard is: "To and from site ONLY".

Maybe I am an old fuddy-duddy, but I would rather hear a Harley putting through a CG to the gate....over some BRAT on a bicycle screaming all day long, with parents who seem NOT to hear them.

My 03' sportster has screaming Eagle pipes with most of the baffles drilled out (a lot quieter than straight, but louder than stock). It is carbureted, so it MUST warm up with a bit of high idle choke. I NEVER idled it long, I NEVER "burped" the pipes...I NEVER heard a complaint.

HOWEVER...an owner of a private CG can do as they wish. I think a discrimination claim could be made against a state park (I have had mine in a few S.P.'s).

I had my dual sport with me in a Forest Service campground in Big Bear. Got all suited up and headed out for a ride. Ranger jumped out of the kiosk at the gate ready to ticket me for riding an OHV in camp. I pointed to my plate and she was very nice, "have a nice ride" she said! I've had rangers and camp hosts get on me about my "dirt bike" not allowed. I politely tell them that it is a street legal motorcycle that just happens to have knobbies and they usually back off. But you have to be polite and not be joy riding around camp; ride out, hit the trails, ride back in.
