Have a 18K B&W Patriot hitch and a Trail Aire pinbox. I get more chucking than I like. Trailer is loaded heavy in the front all the normal things to help get rid of chucking. My question is..I have hitch setup so the pin is as far back as the adjustment will allow. This puts the pin about centered over the axle. I can move it ahead 4-5 inches. Will this help to eliminate chucking? Towing with a dually, everything sits nice and level.B.O.

IMO, having the hitch farther forward would help for chucking. If you have room, not getting the truck bumper/tailgate too close to the FW, I'd set hitch for pin to be 3-4 inches ahead of axle center, just to try it. The B&W arms are easy to move, as is removing the hitch head.Eliminate....maybe not, but should make noticeable difference.Jerry

Im guessing your hitch head is loose to the pin. What your experiencing is hitch slop.

Adjust the response on the brake controller. The trailer brakes need to come on with the truck brakes not after. Chucking when you brake is due to poor brake controller adjustment. If you are talking about chucking at speed that may be related to your hitch or the road surface. If it is a up and down not a back and forth issue look at the hitch. If it is back and forth then look to the brake adjustment.

I think the Trail Air is a great pin box for up, and down movement, but the Trail Air Flex, or MorRyde would help more with the chucking.

I guess what you consider chucking to be, I consider it to be fore-aft forces generated by the trailer and transmitted to the truck. A test for this would be to put your head on the head rest while traveling on rough roads and see if it bounces off. When your trailer pushes the pin down it also pushes forward resulting in chucking. Your Trail-Air pin box will dissipate the bouncing (up and down forces) but not the chucking forces due to its rear pivot point design. It could also be said that your pin box exacerbates chucking because the design pushes the pin forward when it compresses. Usually, trailers that long don't chuck much due to their smaller hitch angle. I doubt moving the head assembly forward will help as the pin box is still securely attached to the frame of the truck via the hitch.If you translate hitch noise and clunking as chucking then I still doubt adjusting your hitch will help.I've had severe chucking issues when the brakes were never in play. I can see how a poorly dialed in brake controller will cause problems similar to chucking.There was a member a couple of months back with similar gear and similar problems. I don't think so.
We have several top rated lightweight RV type hitches.....your B&W is one of them.
Chucking can show up with any GN/5th wheel hitch on any combo even my tandem and triaxle GN trailers. Having five one ton drw trucks (chevy/Ford with different wheelbases/year models) on the road pulling my different trailers we quickly found which truck trailer combo had no issues and which combo was a real pain in the azz to operate.
I've had some trailers that chucked hard when the deck was loaded heavy.....and others didn't.

There is no one thing we can do that works for all truck/trailer combo's that eliminates all chucking issues.

The B&W is the best there is. Also comes from a fine company. Look them up on the internet and learn about how they are made. Any problems I am having with chucking are not because of the quality of the hitch.

Bad overpass sucks for us but the alpenlite just takes it very easy with a big lift and it is over. we are well matched. Old stuff that is working great for us.

You have a good setup along with a heavy RV that has a good pin weight!

Now there are times hitting a big dip or bad overpass that will give you one HE!! of a jerk but that is not possible to correct.

We had the same issue with chucking on a trip to Kennedy Space Center. I shifted the hitch forward, increased pin weight and lowered the trailer tire pressure. Took a second trip to Titusville (KSC) about 6 months later, same route, good old I95, quite a difference. I'm going to try and increase the pin weight more, it's at 20% now, maybe a bit will help. Good luck with your rig. The closest CAT scales is only 4 miles away from us so that helps.
