Directv Winegard Issues

Ok, we are camping at Fiddlers Cove in San Diego. My Winegard Dish won't connect with the directv service. Been on the phone with directv and Winegard. Any suggestions as to how to fix this thing? Tony
  • Need more info.
    Are you in the trees?
Any error message on TV screen?
Can you hear the dish searching?
    What model dish?
Is DirecTv rec set up for your dish?
    Check conn?

No, we were camping on the beach with no trees.
    Yes, directv error code 771
Yes, we could hear it searching
It is a wingard 18' with a dome
Yes, we have used Directv for almost a years.
Yes, all the connections are working properly.

I called directv and Camping and Wingard and asked for advice. They both were unable to help. Have an appointment with Camping World on Friday.

*Technology Corner* forum (here) is a better choice for your question.

Call DirecTV again - different service rep, different solutions (maybe).

Start from scratch - don't say you've already called.

  • OK conn. Are good. But are they conn. To the right conn.
Sometime prople get the conn. Mixed up. Than the signal is not routed right.

Rec set for a round dish. ( that was how my KD was set )

Searching the web for 771 error. There is much info.
Conn., bad rec., searching wrong SAT number.
  • If you have not done it yet go through the setup program again. Look at the at the signal strength from each sat. Since you have a dome this is not probably, but I had the same problem once. When I went outside to look at it the arm had not folded down. Went up on the roof pushed it down and it locked up as usual.

  • Ok, I finally figured it out. Opened up the plastic cover on the dish. Turns out, there was a missing cotter pin on the dish. Even though the motor was turning the dish in the right direction, it couldn't lock on to the satellite. I replaced the pin and now it works fine. Thanks for all the comments and help.
  • Glad I read these posts. I too have been having a hard time getting locked up sat signal with dish. Seems to be getting super finicky. I was going to to spider hunting, figuring there was probably one building webs inside the dome and somehow fouling it up.but, if parts can move around a little making it work harder to get the job done then there's more reason to do some investigating. Otherwise there isn't really any turning to a Winegard dome dish, is there?

The satellite inside the dome not only rotates approx. 360 degrees, but it also steps up and/or down, all this to lock onto the satellite signal..so yes, there is more movement inside the dome than what you might think...

Before I went with the Trav'ler HD satellite, I had a dome and on occasion, I would take the dome off (easily done) and inspect the unit to make sure all was well...I had to replace a limit switch one time when it wouldn't lock onto sat. sig... I found this myself...got part through Winegard under warranty...Alway's found them pretty good to deal with.
