Electric Landing gear repair HELP

2009 Cougar Fifth wheel. Went to leave for a weekend getaway, all loaded up, went to re-track the front two landing gear legs. Driver's side goes up first then finally the other side reaches the top. The split second the other side reached the top, the drivers side leg came crashing down to the ground, both pipes. Now the motor just spins. From researching it, it sounds like I might need a new gear box or shear pin. How do I do this? Did a quick youtube search, couldn't find anything.

Thanks for helping.
  • I do not believe a repair kit will help you. I have mine apart now and you still can not pull out the inner movable leg so I think you you have a broken traveling nut support. I think your only recourse is a new leg. Mine has a sheared pin in the vertical shaft to the top gear.
  • Did you find this document? Has good views of how the gears assemble.

  • UPDATE Day 3: Called the RV place, they can't fit me in until 12 Sep...ok with that, the part that :M me is they do not allow/have Saturday drop off!!!

Anyway, the wife and I decided to see what we can do. Discovered the gear box and probably landing gear are Venture.

Took the entire driver's side leg off and thought I put everything back together, of course I had leftover parts; and the leg still does not go up.

Decision time: buy a replacement set of legs and install them myself or try a pin repair kit ($50 or $350)?
  • Yeah, probably broken or missing pin. Sounded at first like just the equalizing shaft between the two sides, but with it crashing to the bottom makes me think the gear has come loose on at least one leg. You'll have to get into it to find the problem. Hopefully just the equalizer pin because that one is simple to get to. It is actually just a bolt through the shaft.

I believe my Cougar has an Atwood landing gear. Probably not this exact one, but they are all pretty similar to what is shown in this document. Exploded view and parts list near the bottom. Check your owners manual too, because you should have got a manual like this with the trailer.
