I have asked for comments on this engine, since I recently bought one , a 2003 dually, not knowing it to be a 6.0.

NOW ..... I wish to MODIFY my question as follows .....

Have any of you actually OWNED one that DID NOT .... have serious problems with it ?

Thanks ... Richard

That AR9100 is great stuff for the 6.0. I've been running it for a couple of years. In fact, I went back to Rotella 15W dino. My truck didn't need both AR9100 and the 5W synth.

All the big 3 have had there issues. The 6.0 is probably one of the worse ones for sure. But when they are taken care of and running right it is a beast for sure. I have an 05 and only have 93xxx miles on it. Just recently started having what's known as injector stiction issues. Swapped oil from rotella dino 15w-40 to full synthetic 5w-40 and added archoil 9100 (do a search for more info) additive in the oil and WOW! what a difference so far. All engines are of course dependant on good clean oil. But in the 6.0 the oil is the lifeblood. The engine shears the oil like no other and excessive oil change intervals, poor quality oils, etc causes tons of issues. I've only been running this combination for appr 500mi so far so I can't swear by it yet. But the cold starts, quietness of the engine (injectors and valves) have been improved tremendously. Also I've noticed an improvement in mpg also. I am bone stock with the exception of blue spring kit and turbo back 4in exhaust and was getting around 13 to 13.5 avg mpg over the last year or so. I'm at 15.5 now. And this is not from the trucks computer mpg display (its showing 15.8 which is very close), this is hand calculated miles to gallons at fill up. So obviously something is working. Best of luck!

I have a 2005 6.0 that ran great for 96,000 miles. It's been a real headache since then, though. At 96,000 miles the Fuel Injector Control Module went out and it cost about $800. Right after that I noticed that I was blowing coolant out the degas bottle when I was towing. After two trips to Ford and three independent shops, they finally discovered a blown head gasket. It only leaked when towing and I was unemployed, so I didn't get it fixed until last month. In the meantime the brakes locked up on it and they charged me $1200 to replace the calipers, discs, and pads. I just got it out of the shop two weeks ago after getting the truck bulletproofed for $8000 and the thermostat was stuck open. When they tried to fix it they broke the nipple off the radiator where the degas line attaches and that cost me $330. I just got the truck back from that last night.

A lot of people would have sold the truck to an unsuspecting buyer when they found the blown head gasket but I didn't want to do that. I was going to have to fix it whether I sold it or kept it. I just hope that it's bad times are behind us for awhile.

This ^^^^ is why you stay away from a 6.0.
Yes there are a few good ones. But there are just too many stories like the one above.
At this point why get involved with the 6.0 debacle. It is a well known and documented mess.

I have read a lot of 6.0 owners with tuners will re-program them to 'stock' then have dealer work done. This was very popular while the 6.0's were still under the Ford warranty. Apparently the tuners did not leave any traces of mods when that was done. I'm not sure about the 6.4L

They say that they can chek the computer on the 6.7 to se if a tuner has bean used, is this also possible on the 6.0 or 6.4

They broke it and you paid? How does that work?

A lot of people must've ignored the maintenance schedule.

I've had one for 3 years and it's great. The ones that are problematic are usually the ones that have ignored regular maintenance intervals. Keep it maintained and you should be fine if the previous owner maintained it also.

As a PS to the above - The radiator shop had three vehicles getting radiator work done - all Powerstrokes. Mine and another 6.0 had both broken off the nipple on the upper tank and the 6.7 had a cracked plastic lower tank. The Radiator Shop replaced my plastic tank with an aluminum one.

Just my opinion, but I think he has better things to do than pick your truck, at least I hope he does. ๐Ÿ™‚

Well at least he'll have someone to blame besides himself when things go bad.

Yes there have been some problems. Bought a 2003, which later my son in law bought and drove to about 120.000. Started replacing injectors and he traded it off. Bought a F350 05, which a loved. I did work on the erg, coolant , and coolant tank had to be replaced but done under warranty. I still loved the truck. I now have the 6.7 Ford which is also an awesome truck.
