I renewed My plates for our 5th wheel and was asked, Do you want 3 year or Permanent plates. Missouri legislation has passed a bill that only applys to 5th wheels. Only a few $'s more and as long as i own this 5th wheel I never have to renew. Who would have thought? I asked why just 5th wheels and She did not know.

The Michigan law is based on weight of trailer. It ranges from $100-300 and it can be for, personal use or commercial semi trailers.

I believe the idea of the permanent plate for fifth wheel and gooseneck trailers in Missouri is because we pay a plate regis fee for the truck that is based on the total GCW of the truck and trailer. So we have effectively already paid the "road use tax for the trailer" in the registration of the tow vehicle. The fee for the one time plate on the trailer is essentially a document fee.

We have the perm plates on our horse trailer and equipment trailer.

To the OP, the Missouri State park at Weston Bend is very nice.

Would never happen in California. In fact, I would not be surprised to see them pass a law to make us get our fiver a smog check!

You can get permanent plates here in Virginia for most vehicles. I have them for my 5th Wheel, Trailer, and Pickup. The Permanent plates for my truck were significantly highly than the permanent plates for the 5'r and Trailer.

Sorry Pete but your all wrong on this one. I have always been able to buy a Tennessee SEMI tag (read life time tag) for my trailers. I have these on my boat ant my travel trailer. And they are not "commercial" tags. The cost is high. It takes 9 years to see a savings. I just bought a set two months ago.

attuco,

I think you misread something. In Michigan, the max $300 ONE TIME fee for a large heavy towable over 10,000 lbs dry is forever. No yearly fees ever. $200 ONE TIME fee for 2500 lbs to 10,000 lbs dry weight. $75 ONE TIME fee for up to 2500 lbs.

Owning for 10 years and paying $300 for the one time non-expiring plate = $30/year. Paying $200 one time = $20/yr. Paying $75 one time is $7.50/year.

Boat trailers etc one time fees are for the bare trailer itself by manufacturer's title weight as shipped from the factory. Cargo carried on any trailer has nothing to do with trailer registration weight.

Some states base their registration fees on total weight on the vehicle's and/or the trailer's tires to determine their registration fee amounts and what the unit is allowed to weigh legally. Big fines if you exceed the registration limits.

Infinityrver,

That same paid $100,000 5th wheel if purchased new or used in Michigan or registered in Michigan if purchase elswhere would have a ONE TIME registration fee of $300 max if it's dry title weight is over 10,000 lbs. The registration is good for as long as you own the 5th wheel and there are no other state charges ever after the one time 6% sales tax and the $8 title fee is paid on the original purchase.

That's a huge difference from the even the first year's expense of buying and registering in Maine of $7900 base charge the first year ($2400 + $5500 sales tax) or in most other states. Then the added expense in Maine for the 5th wheel of ($2000 the 2nd year, $1700 the 3rd year, $1200 the 4th year) already adds up to $12,800 in just 4 years and the cost continues on to much higher as long as it's owned while the resale value of the 5th wheel decreases rapidly or drops like a rock! WOW! INSANE! Doesn't even include the tow vehicle's state expenses of ownership or the costly insurance on the $100,000 RV!

Many other states repeats this insanity and maybe to a lesser scale but still a very high expense to simply own an RV be able to use it on the roads etc. My answer is:

NEVER!

It would severely damper the desire and enjoyment of RV'ing owning in so many states. Lots of states also have personal property taxes. My brother's does and his MH has cost a mint over the years. So do our friends in Northern Indiana who told us the actual personal property taxes they have paid on the dining room table and chairs given to them as a wedding gift by his parents 58 years ago of have added up to over 4 times what the dining set had even cost.
That's so far beyond insane that it's way off the charts of common sense!

I live in TAXATION land. Our license plates actually say "Vacation Land". No one hear can top what we pay annually. We pay 2.4% of MSRP the first year for a vehicle (car or truck). We also, pay 2.4% of MSRP on all camper trailers (5ers, TT, popups & the like). The next year it will go down to a 2.0%. Third year 1.7%. Fourth year 1.2%. Fifth year it will level off every year there after at .7%.

So, on a $100,000.00 5er or MH that's $2400.00. Also, we may have less sales tax than a lot of States. That's 5.5%.

This is not what I would consider having "bragging rights"!

Wow! WIsh we had an option like that here in Nova Scotia. My one ton runs around 160$ / year and IIRC my TT is about $105 year and goes by weight.
