front landing gear

my 2006 montana fifth wheel front landing jacks will raise my fifth wheel so far then just makes a racheting noise. I drop it a little then raise it again get to the same point and does the same thing. tryed the hand crank and can hardly move it they are electric 2manyscots@gmail.com
  • I agree with RR they are probably fully extended and need to be adjusted. Those damn things are pretty tricky. By that I mean they confuse the heck out of me. That's why I bought hydraulics
  • Where are the LOWER LEGS set at,and If you ask..WHAT......??????........
    Then,theres your problem.....:W

Yes. It takes a bit or figurin' to see how it can work. A buddy of mine couldn't figure out how to get the 5er lower than the starting point.

New member, maybe new to 5er.

To the OP, the front landing gear have an inner set of leg extensions, I normally lower the outer (powered) legs 4" to 6" then drop the inner legs to the ground and lock at the nearest pin hole. You may have manual clips, or spring loaded pins, just be sure the pin goes all the way through both sides and is locked in place.

Then once disconnected from the TV, you can raise or lower to level as necessary.
  • tell us the make. RBW jacks are known to fail in the thrust bearings, leading to an overload at a # weight lift point. Mine did.
  • STOP running them up where they make that ratcheting noise.......you with break a shear pin and they will quit working.

With them retracted to travel position.......pull the pin on inner tube and let it drop to ground. Set the pin THEN run the landing gear down.

    But stop ratcheting them!

Need to paint a mark 1" down on outer tube BEFORE they ratchet.
THAT should be the STOP Mark.
  • I typically extend the landing gear 4-6" before dropping the inner tube. This typically gives the needed adjustability to get the 5er level. If you don't do this you run the chance of not being able to lower the front far enough to get level.
  • Extend front jacks as determined by grade
If the ground is soft provide cribbing under foot pads
If ~ level extend ~ 1’ then pull pin on extenders, adjust extenders to ground, block as needed and fine level.
If grade rises extend jacks to ~ 6” of ground pull pin on extenders, adjust extenders to ground, block as needed and fine level.
If grade drops pull pin and lower & adjust extenders to ground and fine level

  • I always check to see how much I will need to raise or lower the front after disconnecting from the truck to get the trailer level. That check lets me determine about how much travel room I will need with the front legs. If nose high while hitched,I extend more before dropping legs. If nose low while hitched, I extend the drop legs a little further.
