generators on the front of the truck?

I am dry camping in September and planning to take my generator with me. I have a hitch on the front of my truck and made a platform to hold it. Does anyone run with stuff on the front ? My main concern is overheating , although the genny is only 19" wide , I ASSUME that will leave enough airflow to pass aside it. No hitch on the rear of the 5er...too large to go in the bed with my slider...
  • I made a rolling hitch bracket for my Honda EU3000 to haul in my front hitch. When we go dirt biking, the bikes are in the back hitch or trailer and I don't like storing the genny in the 5ver. Works great. Never noticed any problem with heating on my truck.

  • You have 6 cooling systems on that truck so you would think you have enough, but if it were me I wouldn't mess with it. Mine runs a little hot already and I've had to let it cool down on the side of the road a few times.

Question- Isn't there a generator compartment on your trailer? Why not put the generators in there?

There is but the door is an inch too small, and the genny is heavy enough that I do not want to try and manhandle it, and since I do not carry one ever,,, that compartment has other stuff in it...

  • I carry a Honda EU2000i and a 6 gallon extended run tank on the front. I've never had any kind of problem, either using a truck camper or pulling a fifth wheel.
  • Have had a front hitch on all of our vehicles since we started rving back in 2005.I have mounted my generator on the front and have experienced no issues. Occasionaly I'll move it to the back of the TT and mount a 4 bike carrier up front. Still no over heating issues. You'll be fine.
  • I too have a snow plow and just know that it does runs hotter when I am on the highway , I also have traveled to Florida in July with 4 bikes up there but the flow around bikes is fine...I think maybe I will just place it off center.....
  • We see lots of 4x4 at the Delaware beaches with huge coolers on the front for surf fishing. Ofcourse they don't have the strain of lugging a camper around behind them either.
  • You might have a problem in June/July, with the heat of the season, but I doubt that you'll have a problem in September, up in PA.
We drove up to PA with a show plow on the front of my BILs truck, and he had a problem, but that's a whole lot larger than your genset.

Keep an eye on your temperatures....but I really feel that you should have no problems.
I've run with bikes on the front, but they don't have the air flow issues.

    Have a great time!
  • I carried a Honda 3000 watt generator on the front of my Super Duty for one football season and had no problems. The next season I switched to two 2000 watt.
