That sounds like roads and terrain that is out of the question for towing a large 5er toy hauler on.

I am a new member (obviously) but I do tow exactly what your looking for

I have a 2014 2500HD CCB Denali with the DMAX. I pull a 2016 Genesis 40CR (5ht wheel TH).

Couple things about my setup:

1) I am very close on the weight limits of my truck, depending on what toys I load in it and how/where I load the toys in the back. Max Loaded I am over my GVWR and GCWR by 500 pounds, normal trips I have to short carry the water so that I am under limits
2) I wouldnt even attempt to pull this without a Diesel, pay the premium now for the Diesel. Youll get your money back if you sell it or youll get your money back with the longevity. Either way, go Diesel or dont bother.
3)My DEF tank is no issue, its actually hidden behind my AMP Research steps and id take out my Steps if something was big enough to take out the tank.
4. As many have stated (and I have discussed a bunch with lincster on a different forum) a big 5th wheel TH will be over most trucks on pin weight, especially older wood framed units (mine is all aluminum). I am at the edge of my truck and have considered going dually for the added comfort.

My new guy who has exactly what your looking for; 2 cents

I think you're on the right track considering the limited mileage you plan on pulling. The upfront penalty ($$$$) might not be worth it for you. But then I guess I must ask why a toy hauler if its just going to sit in one place at a marina all season, then back home.

Maybe I'm missing something but if you're not "hauling toys" why not get a conventional fifth wheel?

RinconVTR as a non-regular to the forum let me give you some insight. Over the years, many years, many of the regulars here know how many people have under-purchased a truck only to be caught with buyers remorse or worse a dangerous setup being way over loaded. Toy Haulers unlike other TT/5ers are notorious for being very tongue heavy and heavy over all. I was one of those owners at one point myself.

This is also a bit of a wild, yet well-intentioned and informed bunch. Perhaps the "LOL" was missed when you read lincster's comment about working for GM. I don't think any offense was meant; its sort of the age old GM/Ford/Dodge teasing that goes on. In the end nobody really cares, once people are out on the trails then the debate changes to Motorcylces vs ATVs ๐Ÿ˜‰

While you may not like all the posts, on an open forum it happens.

Specific questions help to keep things on topic, but when it comes to what truck and toy hauler are good, it's an open can of worms. Folks were trying to be helpful by asking for some more information.

Very well said.

I have 2500 6.0 gas, 4:10 rear, 6spd trans. I don't tow a 5th wheel but a Livin lite VRV. Loaded its around 7500 pounds. Travel all over the country with it. Do I wish it was a diesel? You bet I do, but it does a decent job for what it is. For what you want to do and the short hauls that your planning it should be just fine. That 6.0 is a gas hound with the best MPG I ever got, unloaded, not towing 15mpg. Bullet proof motor though!

With a 2500 especially non DM, you will be very limited as far as 5th wheel garage models.

I sense a man who will suffer diesel envy the minute he hooks up to whatever trailer he buys-
I can't imagine driving a gas 2500 empty let alone with a load.

As a side note- for as little towing as you will do why not buy the trailer you want (bigger) and pay someone to tow it down and back to the marina? Better yet, don't buy a trailer or a truck. Buy a mobile down on the water and drive a Prius back and forth...

The DPF is hidden under the truck, completely out of view.... how is that a bad location for it?

Entirely up to you but there are not a lot of lightweight 5th wheel options and knowing how mine handles the weight I wouldn't want to try it.

I have a 2002 Chevy 2500HD 4x4 extended bed with a gas 6.0 motor and automatic transmission. For almost 8 years I carried a Lance camper that weighed 3200 pounds wet but was probably closer to 3500 most of the time. If you go by the sticker and take all of the other passenger weights and add to cargo I can carry 3200 pounds, tow max is 10,200. I also had bigger tires to allow for the extra weight. I would struggle up hills going as low as 45 but not running the rpm's high. MPG as low as 7 but often around 10. We just sold it in December and now I have a hitch pull toyhauler that has a max weight of 9980. I went back to stock tire size to hopefully regain some mpg. We went out over New years weekend nearly fully loaded and I could climb at 50mph but again, not pushing the rpms all the way up. Mileage is ranging from 7-10 still. I hope this helps you in your questions. It is a great truck but if you have the option for something more powerful you should not hesitate. I would not attempt to pull a 5th wheel with it.
