Going Through Atlanta

I live right outside of Nashville and avoid driving through town at all costs (if I can). Just remember:
1. Turn signals become inoperable at the TN. state line.
2. Directional signs (Lane ends, Exit only, etc.) are there for looks (since nobody reads them).
3. I-65 is under perpetual construction.

We came thru Atl. in early Nov. Stayed north in Acworth for an o/n and left early 800am. Promptly ran into an hour delay just south of Acworth. Breezed thru downtown at 70mph after the stop and go and then hit another 1.5 hour delay on the south side. Stopped in Valdosta as it took so long. It's a **** shoot due to construction/accidents. But do stay in the middle lanes and go straight thru town.

Rush hour - Mon-Fri 6:30am-9am, 4:30-7pm.

I live in the Atlanta area as well. Like others have said, stay off of 285. It is ranked in the nation's deadliest interstates. The rush hours in the ATL last until around 9 in all directions. A few years ago, many businesses started staggering their start times to offset the trouble their employees had getting to work on time.

One more question for those from Atlanta. How late on. January Monday does rush hour go on? I had guessed we would be going through around 8:00, but if we got there earlier, I wouldn't want to get stuck in rush hour. What would be the earliest I should try to go through?

You might want to look at a map... you really don't want to do that, unless you really like mountains. The road's good, but can get real twisty and windy in places. Actually, parts of it are real nice and 4 lane divided. Besides, I-95 is not a good route to go, unless you don't have any other options. About that time of year, it will be loaded with snowbirds flocking south.

If you stay away from rush hours, Atlanta traffic, while scary, usually moves quite well, too well for some folks. The worst traffic is the southbound morning rush into Atlanta, the northbound evening rush out of Atlanta, and I-75 south of Atlanta down to around McDonough at just about any time of day. Hit it right and you can make it through Atlanta in about 30-40 minutes. It's taken me longer to get through Ocala on US-301.
