Help with wheel ratings

I had the wheels off our Cougar today while doing wheel bearing and brake service. While they were off I wanted to make note of the aluminum wheel ratings. But I'm not sure how to interpret what I found. Here are some pics.

Why are there two load ratings, and what do the 5/ and 6/ mean?

Any ideas what the J following the 15X6 means?

I can't find any reference to DOT codes for RV wheels. Any ideas on this?

I'm pretty sure these are Tredit model T02 wheels. The load rating seems to match up in their specs for 15X6, 6-5.5 wheel. There are no pressure ratings stamped on these wheels, unless it is under the tire and I find that unlikely.

My plan is to go to a 225-75x15 LRE Maxxis tire. Looks to me like these wheels are rated for that. But lets just talk about wheels, okay?
  • I believe that the rating are for 5-bolt and 6-bolt patterns, respectively. If they are, then these are, at most, a D-rated rim, and would probably have a 65 psi max rating. Yes, they do put psi ratings under the tire, usually in the bead groove...which is =really= stupid.

So that would mean they use the same wheel casting for 5 lug and 6 lug wheels. I had not thought of that. These are 6 lug wheels so the higher rating would apply.

BTW, 2830lbs matches the rating of that LRE Maxxis tire. So not sure why you think it is only good for LRD.

  • The J after the 15x6 stands for the shape of the wheels bead seat flange.

Looking at your clicky shows the 5 bolt wheel = 2150 lbs and 6 bolt wheel = 2830 lbs. Looking at a Dexstar 15"x 6 lug wheels shows a 80 psi for their 2830 lb rated wheels and 65 psi for their 2050 lb rated wheels.

DOT/NHTSA depends on SAE for wheel markings.

IMO as long as the wheels have high pressure stems (100 psi)their good for 80 psi
  • Thanks Jim.

Looking at the voids cast into the center flange, I find it odd that they would put the 5 lug rating info on the wheel. It cannot be drilled for 5 bolt, because it has 6 cast voids. All I can think of is that they use a multi-part casting die, with interchangeable centers area. Makes sense I guess.
  • It is a 15x6 wheel with a 6 bolt pattern good up to 2830lbs @ 80 psi

My mistake. I thought the E-rated tires were just over 3k lbs. Either way, the Maxxis are probably the best ST tires out there.
