How should I adjust tire pressure to/from mountains

With 70-80 psi inside the tire, the less then 8 psi difference from sea level to 20,000 feet - amounts to nothing. Tire pressure on the sunny side of a parked car to the shade side will change the internal pressure more. At least monthly, (weekly towing) check the pressure before driving, and air up to your preferred pressure. Never let air out - it leaks out not in. Unless someone overinflated the tire you should never need to release air.

Living in the Phoenix Metropolitan area, we have our tires set at 75 PSI rear and 65 PSI front. Never had an issue. As concerned, checking tire pressure when at high altitude, they ready the same.
Also light for "LOW PRESSURE" comes on in morning, but then goes off a short time later. This tells me that all is ok, just temp may play a part in the readings. I don't adjust while traveling but still continue with my walk around checks daily and when stopped for a break or fuel etc. Good Luck & Be Safe ! ! !

One thing to put on the "forget list".

I never adjust pressure on trips in the Rockies.
It may be 100 degrees here when we leave for NM/CO/WY trip with tires at 80 psi cold set on the trailer.

At each stop I do a visual and use my old thumper checking for a low tire but never adjusted a tires pressure. Simply not needed just because of elevation.


Sure a tire may not be 80 psi up high where its much cooler but no longer than we drive at interstate speeds up high on I-70 thru Ike's tunnel or on a twisty winding narrow state hiway in the mountains , the tires will be fine.

We never worried about it and it wont be long leaving Ruidoso and the altitude will change in a hurry.Thirty minutes down the road and you will be at a lower level and probably regret messing with your tires.

I check tires in Louisiana go to mountains pressure changes I do not worry about it. Pressure is always correct when we get home. Also remember potato chip bags and tooth paste bought at home inflates in the mountains and blows out the bag or tube it was in(lesson learned).

80# psi,at almost sea level. The higher you go, the tire will expand, due to less force from outside pressures. In theory, increasing inside volume of the tire, but deceasing the Pounds per Square Inch.
If you start out at 80 psi in all tires and at all tire checks during your trip, they are close to being equal.

Set them at home and don't worry about it. We tow to Colorado every year including over mountain passes and stay at sbout 8,500' and never change anything. And home is just a few miles from you.

To answer the question-don't. I live at 5600ft and travel both lower and higher. If I was worried about altitude I would be spending a lot of time adjusting pressures. I'm not. I check pressures before the trip and then watch the TPMS for issues.
