How should I adjust tire pressure to/from mountains

Just before leaving Dallas TX (Altitude 600 ft, hot that day at 98 deg,) I set my Maxxis 16" tire pressures to 80psi as recommended by Maxxis and I headed up to Ruidoso NM (Altitude 7900 ft, cool highs only 75 deg). Getting ready to head back home I checked and my tires are between 72psi and 74psi. What should I inflate them to? I'll be back down to below 2000 ft and running on the interstate in 85 deg. weather after only about 2 or 3 hours driving.

Never paid any attention to tires for low vs high altitude pressure.

If you have a sleep number bed there is quite the difference between firmness at low vs high altitude.

Be sure to LOWER pressure in Sleep Number beds when going from low to high altitude!
  • Don't adjust for altitude, if you bump up pressure at 3K or 4K feet then go down to sea level you will be over your max pressure.
This is one of the reason I never pump up to max. I run a few lbs below because we will often see a 5K foot difference between our camp sights and home!

  • Adjust pressure COLD (in AM on travel day) to recommended pressures.

IF 80 psi is what you use..then adjust them to 80 psi in AM.

Then next day adjust them to 80 psi again.

    Never adjust during travel.........
