Memphis Tenn

We have been to Memphis numerous times and really enjoy the city. In the month of May they have a different festival every week. My personal favorite is the BBQ cookoff, its a lot of fun just walking around and watching all the cooks and their unique cookers. They also have dog racing if you are into that sort of thing. We have been through Nashville but never spent anytime there so I can't comment but....Memphis for me! I forget to add Mud island which has the Worlds largest Bass Pro shop in the glass pyramid.

We spent a week in Nashville last spring. It was a good time and thee is tons of stuff to do. If you run out of major attracktions just hit Broadway and sit in the bars. There are some of the most talented people the rest of the world will never know. My favorite was Honky Tonk Central. There are 3 floors and there was a live band on each floor. If you get down to the bars for music track down a gentleman by the name of Brit stokes. If you can find him in one doing his solo acoustic show you will just be blown away.

A short drive south will get you to Chattanooga as well. If you get down there you have to check out the Tennessee aquarium. It is one of the best I have ever been to.

If you haven’t been to Eastern TN. I would recommend you do Nashville and the Knoxville/Smoky Mountain area.

We lived just south of Memphis for 11 years and it isn’t a desirable place to visit.

We live in Eastern TN and would be happy to recommend campgrounds and things to do in this area.

In Nashville you can park that big truck up by Vanderbuilt and catch the tour busses that criss cross the city from there. Free on and off for 2 days on one of the vendors at least.
There is an awful lot to see and do there if you like Country. Don't miss the Opryland Hotel, the Opry itself, Music Row, Honkytonk Hwy, the Ryman, Country Music HOF, all the side streets of off Broadway, it goes an and on like this sentence.
We found a show featuring Steve Hall off the beaten path with a soso buffett. The show was great.
If you want the Bluebird Cafe or the Opry get reservations way in advance and take your chances of the artists. The Opry does that anyway as they never know who is in town until very close to show dates.
There is a huge COE lake just east of town off of 40 with multiple campgrounds. It books early.

We had friends stay at the Graceland RV park, and used the shuttle to Beale ST, and they enjoyed Graceland too.
As said, the Graceland area is not good for shopping or dining.
We don't go to West Memphis unless going to the casino, or headed out of town.

X2 on Nashville. There are 2 really nice CG's 'right downtown' easy to access all and everything you want to see in Nashville and be only a few mintues aawy from getting back to your RV. I make a point at staying at the KOA on my way down south every year.

Memphis? I wouldn't waste one minute going there. Its' one giant crime scene. I once asked for directions to Elvis house and instead of getting directions I was told 'don't even go there with your RV'.

* And God forbid you see a sign that says West Memphis? TURN AROUND!

Tom Sawyer CG IMHO is a great place to go to. Right smack on the Mississippi. Watching the huge barges day and all lit up at night is priceless. I stopped for the night and ended up staying a week.

A little note on Tom Sawyer CG. Use THEIR directions to the CG.

I did not, I used my GPS instead biggest mistake I have ever made RV'ing...which took me right thru West Memphis. I had thugs jumping on my toad, banging on my MH. I ran every single stop light and stop sign to get out of there. And not one cop to be seen.

We have been to both places and would say two full days in Memphis and maybe a third if you want to just unwind. Stayed at Tom Sawyer across the river and loved it. Ten minutes and you are at the visitor center and river park. As for Nashville there is more to do if you are a country music fan, so we spent more time there. A day at The Hermitage is and some of the surrounding area is nice along with the whole Nashville scene. Check out things to do online in each place and then you will have a better idea of how much time you need in each place. Hope you have a great trip.

We did a day visit to franklin because we both enjoy civil war history. Nashville, is a very busy place and we had to book the koa 2 month ahead. We did not spent any time in menphis. The main attractions are country western and civil war period history. Jim2007.

Nashville is into Country & Western. Grand ole opere, etc. Memphis is R&B Elvis, etc. Depends on what you are into. We have been to Nashville several times and have enjoyed the City and Culture. You may or may not like it, but that is up to you!
