New to us 5th wheel

OK we purchased a 2012 Sandpiper 365SQ and tow it with a 2008 F-350 crew cab. I have been towing pull behinds for 20 years, this is my first 5th wheel.

The first thing I had happen to me when bringing the camper home was when I hit a dip in the road at hwy speed I bottomed out the truck. Now when I hitched up 5th wheel I was impressed that there was no squat in the rear end. I have been told by my RV dealer this is normal.

Wondering if a airbag system would help??
  • That must have been quite a dip, to go from hardly any squat, to hitting bottom! Sure suspension aid would help, bags, Timbrens, etc. I would not call this normal, but if it does the same crossing bridges, rail tracks, normal bumps, then you will need support. Are you under your RAWR?

  • I would suggest that you look the suspension over. You might find that you are just compressing down on the overload and not the bottom. If true bottom the stops will show the contact area.

i just hate those big woop de doos, especially on and off of some bridges. A tell tale sign that a big one is coming up are the black marks on the highway.
  • I doubt you bottomed out but I understand that exaggerated bump feeling you can get at speed - I experienced similar with our setup (albeit more mild from the sound of it). I added Timbrens and they eliminated the issue.
