Older Fivers with bunk houses?

Just musing my next purchase, I'm not looking for anything really expensive so I will probably be looking at older trailers. Just got rid of a travel trailer and would really like a fiver.

Anyhoo, my old trailer was a 95 Layton 31 ft'r with no slide. We really need a slide out, and we really need bunks, or at least a separate area for our boys.

Did they make bunk house Fivers in the early to mid 90's with slides?

The closest I have found (not much looking btw) is an older 1988 (yawn, I know) King of the Road with a rear queen bed and a front living room over the pin. (with the mid living lay out) I could see the front living room being easily converted to bunk beds. But no slides in this oldie (pretty sweet trailer though)

Anyway, I digress. Back on topic... Can anyone point in a direction with which fivers had bunks back in this 85-95 range with bunks... and slide? (Slides a dream at this age, I fully understand). How was quality back then?

Again, just musing, I am finding a ton of late 90's - early 00's fivers in the 7-10k range with at least slides.

Thanks!

  • My wife and I started shopping for a new fifth-wheel bunkhouse back in 1990. Initially we could find no fifth-wheel bunkhouses, only bunkhouse travel trailers. Dealers told us that it was because pickup trucks did not hold enough persons to necessitate a bunkhouse layout. That made some sense back then as extended cab and crew cab pickups were not all that common either. In 1992 Fleetwood (Prowler, Wilderness, & Terry) came out with their 29 5S model bunkhouse fifth-wheels. I am not sure which Fleetwood model lines offered the bunkhouse, but my wife & I bought a Prowler 29 5S that year. It always got a lot of attention in campgrounds during the first couple years we had it. Within a year or two, other manufacturers started offering bunkhouse fifth-wheel models. These did not have slide-outs. As I recall, only the very top end trailers had slide-outs back then. I am not sure when slides appeared in the bunkhouse models, but I would guess it was mid to later 90’s from what I recall.

I would say the quality of our 1992 Prowler, and most trailers back then, was very typical of the RV quality today (which I do not consider to be very good).
  • around what year model are you looking for. My 06 has two sets of bunk beds in the back room. Can send pics if you need an idea what the inside looks like. I chose mine because I have three children and the beds weren't criss crossed on top of each other like my old Mallard had.
  • I have a 97 Jayco bunkhouse, and this is my last season with it. If you are interested, email me and I will give you more info. I'm in north Georgia and plan on camping up in Cherokee, NC Labor Day weekend. Not sure where you are located, but like I said, email me if you are interested. Don / wkmeup1@yahoo.com
  • My son in law has a 2005, 25' Cherokee light 5th wheel with slide and bunks for sale in Portland Oregon.
  • Just sold a 1999 KIT ESPRE 294F (30 footer) fiver with bunks in the rear.
Came with a 14 foot slide.
    Very roomy.

Bought it new to live in while out of state for few years.
    Great coach very comfy.
    Had minimum problems with it.

Not sure if there were many bunkhouses built in previous years.
  • I have a 2004 Four Winds (28BH-M5) that has a separate bunk room in the back and a slide that I bought last year for under 10K. So they are out there.
  • Bunks are kind of rare in fivers for some reason. Also, did many trailers even have bunks bunks back then? I don't remember seeing many until some time later.
