refer question??

I have a Dometic model #RM1350SL side by side mounted in the slide. My fifth wheel is a 2015 and the frig works, just not as cool as I feel it should be. From the factory it has 4 small fans that are mounted right under the coils in the upper compartment controlled by a thermostat. I was thinking about mounting a fan in the lower compartment by I'm limited on room. I can mount it so it blows straight out the vent or straight in the compartment?? no room to turn it to blow on any component.

My question is, should I have the air blowing in or out of the vented cover? Thanks, Jeff

Also have two battery powered little fans inside the frig, seems to help a little, noticed a little ice starting to attach to the fins this morning after adding the second fan inside.
  • My solution well be to install a residential refer when I can no longer take my never COLD. Chris

I came home from work and the freezer doing great, the frig lukewarm at best, lots of condensation..... Fans working up top?? I turned it off! I've got the extended warranty and have some other things that need attention. The dealer I bought it from is 1.5 hours away, does anyone know if extended warranty companies let legit mobile companies come to you and do the work??

The clue is the condensation. The door gasket is probably leaking letting warm air in. Use a dollar bill and close the door(s) on it at various places around it. You should feel resistance to pulling it out. If not the gasket is not sealing. Try adjusting the door.
  • I've got the same refrigerator in our Montana High Country. It failed on our shakedown trip. Took it to the dealer. They tried 3 times over a 6 week period. I took it to a family owned and operated RV shop. They only sell parts and do repairs. They replaced the cooling system under Dometic warranty.
I think it has a 2 year warranty. Be sure you are registered with Dometic. Call them and give them the model and serial numbers. They also offer extended warranties on the refrigerator and A/C.
I would look around for an independent repair shop that is authorized to do warranty work on Dometic. Ask neighbors that have RV's or at local RV parks. The dealer has little incentive to fix anything. They usually don't pay enough to keep good techs. They are focused on making their money in the sales showroom.
There is a thread about adding fans on keystonerv.org. I need to add one as well.
  • It was hot today, mid 90's but never once opened, it's parked in my driveway and the frig slide is to the side that gets very little direct sun. Yes, it is level and hooked to 50amp, on electric not that matters. This thing has never cooled like my last fifth wheel or my previous travel trailers but this is the first one with refer in the slide out?? I think I'm just gonna call the dealer and drop it off, right now before I shut it down it was like it wasn't even on.
  • Four fans should be working. Is this your first RV refer? Are you level? My side by side in a slide out goes down to 0 or less and 33 in the refer.

IF you are in blistering heat and no shade and it gets open much they have to work very hard to keep up.

  • Mount fans in top area so they suck air thru condenser fins and blow out top side vent....install ON/OFF switch to control them
  • Think convection, heat rises...

You want to encourage the airflow to exit the top vent.

The bottom grill is for entry air.
  • the air on the fridge's is drafted. That means it enters from the bottom and exits through the top. It flow in the direction air that is heated flows. Make sure you point the fan to blow that direction.
