Sailun S637T overkill for a trailer with 10,200 gvwr?

Hello all,

This is my first camper and I need to put new tires on. After poking around I had decided on the ***Link Removed***. The guy who would mount them at the mom and pop tire shop felt that 14 ply was a waste of money.

We will be taking our little (2 y/o) girl with us camping and I don't mind spending the extra money on a commercial tire if it is less likely to blow out. I have heard the stiffer walls pull better as well.

The toy hauler is rated for 10,200 with 100 gal fresh. So worst case would be a slow careful tow of, say, 11k from the gas station to the campsite after filling up with water. Maybe 10 or 15 miles.

What are your thoughts? Is anyone running Gs on a smaller toy hauler?

Thanks

More capacity above a 10-15 percent reserve above your axle ratings isn't needed.
Your 10200 gvwr trailer may have around 2000 lb pin weight leaves around 2000 lb load per tire.

Have you looked at the new gen ST tires like the Providers....Goodyear Endurance....or Carlisle new HD with the higher 81-87 mph ratings. Higher speed rating on a load carrying tire like a ST or LT are more about coping with heat at highway speeds.

OK I decided to go ahead and drop down to an E rated tire. Looking at the goodyear endurance (made in USA) 235 85. Max load is more than enough at 3640 but pressure is 80 psi.

Thank you for you comments.

thats what the suspension is for. My last rig was a Stryker 2912 with 11k GVWR. it rode better after the Sailuns than before. Now it also came from the factory with decent rubber equalizer and shocks, I could leave a coffee cup on the counter and it was still there after a 400 mile jaunt.

A tire is not the means of suspension. leaf spring provides the bounce it needs, shocks dampen the bounce and the center equalizer takes out the jarring jolting bump and pot hole problems. DOnt think your trailer needs all this, take your shock off your truck and drive it down the road a bit...why should your home on wheels be put through that kind of torture?

You sure don't need a load G tire at 4080-4400 lbs capacity on a trailer that size. A one ton DRW to tow a popup comes to mind. More capacity above a 10-15 percent reserve above your axle ratings isn't needed.
Your 10200 gvwr trailer may have around 2000 lb pin weight leaves around 2000 lb load per tire.

If your wanting a commercial grade tire why not the Michelin XPS rib or the Bridgestone R-250 in a LT235/85-16 E or LT245/75-16 E at 3042 bs capacity. Both are a all steel carcass and are tops for trailers with 5k-6k axle. In fact Michelin advertised the XPS Ribs for commercial trailer service.

Or trailers like my 11200 lb 5er with 5200 lb axles. I use LT 215/85-16 E at 2680 lbs capacity. Ran the first set at 55k miles and 53k miles on the 2nd set. No issues.

Don't think its overkill but not being familiar with that tire, I would think G rated tires need 100 or so lbs of air. If your RV is only rated at 10500lbs I would suspect you have 6 lug rims at the most based on the way manufacturers normally just put minimum sized axles on them so I'm not sure you could put G rated tires on 16" 6 lug rims because of the air pressure rating. You need 8 lug rims I thought for G rated tires.

One thing to remember, ST tires are usually rated at 65 mph at max pressure. With 6000 pounds of capacity, I am running at just over 50% capacity of the tire. I have been running my combo for over 2 years now, the tires run cooler, my ride is substantially better, and the wear is so much better. Even if it is over kill, the economics are too good to not do it.

Sorry about that, it's a default for new members that post links. Wish we didn't need it but the spammers have a field day otherwise. It goes away after a couple days as I recall. Welcome aboard!

I like to run my TT tires with 25% more capacity than what my loaded weight is.

This allows me to not worry when I add two more 6V batteries or a second spare tire and run with the water tank full.
