sidewinder questions

We recently purchased a new to us 2007 Keystone Everest. It came with a "Fabex" Sidewider. I have just discovered installation instructions that say not to use a lube plate with it. Also the lube instructions are not very clear. Could someone tell why no lube plate and what periodic lubing I have to do.

We have probably put 1000 miles on so far with a lube plate and have had no problems with it.

  • I bought mine aftermarket for Holiday Rambler from Tweety's and according to them and Reese, use white lithium grease. I have and had (ZERO) problems.
  • We bought an 08 this summer that had a side winder/5th AB and the dealer that installed it for the original owner cut a slot in a Teflon disc and put it on. I've never had one and I didn't give it a second thought. It worked fine and kept from scraping off the paint but it's not necessary. I have a LB truck so I took the side winder off and reused the 5th AB and moved it back about 10" so it's the length of a standard pinbox. I sure don't miss hitching with that sidewinder - PITA! The sidewinder has Teflon discs top and bottom and the plastic bushing in the turret looks like EHMW. It turned pretty darn tight and I think some chain lube spray would be fine on the plastic pivot parts. Craig
  • Just need to lube up the wedge (sides/bottom), the contact area on king pin and the skid plates (pin box and hitch)

A light film of lube is all that's needed.

Use a spray on graphite lube.......goes on wet then dries.
Grease is messy and attracts dirt.
  • My mistake. Sorry, we did leave the disc wit the old trailer. I still do want to know about lubricating the sidewinder. Anyone with a sidewinder able to explain to me how to do it and with what?

  • The reason is because there is not supposed to be any pivoting motion at the fifth wheel attachment point. The lash point on the fifth wheel uses a blocking plate to prevent motion at that point and allow the rearward pivot point on the Sidewinder to do the work...

  • Hi Bob:

I also have a 2007 Keystone with a sidewinder. The "wedge" that makes the sidewinder work prevents you from being able to install a lube plate. Even if you could install one, the piviot point is not at the hitch, so the lube plate is not necessary.
