Slide leak

Ok, I have had my Forest River fifth wheel in 4 time for slide leak. Only leaks when closed, they have replaced seals inside and out. Forest River is now saying it is the dealer, Camping World, who is messing up and they are now refusing to pay for any more repairs. Camping World says it is the design in the slide that is the problem as they have replaced all seals and put their own time in for free to resolve this. Is there a gutter or something that someone has come up with that I can install myself over slide to stop this leak? Thanks

I had a similar issue when my 'Cougar' slide was closed. There was no real gutter.. just a small one. I climbed up there and noticed that even with the slide closed there was still a small space between the wall strip and the rubber seal. I picked up a roll of closed cell self-stick weatherstripping (maybe two.. because my slide was almost 14 feet long) and stuck it on the wall (where the slide seal meets the wall) and that sealed it up tight!! If I remember correctly the closed cell weatherstripping was 3/4" or 1" wide and 1/4" thick. It worked well!!

This sounds like sage advice. Climb up and look at the top when it's closed. Is there a gap? If so then the slide needs adjusting (or it has a broken shear bolt) and not just to have another seal installed.
  • A slide topper will also protect it when closed. They are mounted over the outside edge of the slide out and covering the upper area of the slide that rests on the outer wall at the top.

  • My trailer was designed without a top flange on the two slides and would leak slightly in a hard blowing rain. As newman fulltimer suggested, I installed slide toppers and the problem was solved. The other benefits of the toppers are a plus.
  • My Cougar has three slides and none of them has a gutter. I agree that it should be easy enough to install one even if you use 3M auto body trim tape to install it temporarily to see if it works. Is there an owner's club/forum for your brand? If so, it would benefit you to join and post this over there. Lastly, I have bought three RVs from CW. We got great deals but, frankly, their service is bad in so many ways. Unfortunately they have ticked off Cardinal to the point where they are denying warranty payment. Call Cardinal and explain your frustration in CW. Ask if there are other dealers or independent repair places that they will authorize you to take it to. I have no direct experience with your problem, but it sounds as though the slide is not coming in tight enough. Good luck & let us know how this turns out.
  • Is the wiper slide completely in place, or possibly missing? This is the rubber wiper that squeezes off any water when the slide is retracted.
  • I thought most FWs have gutters just above the slide. Mine does, and one over the patio awning too. If yours does not, no reason one could not be installed. Mine are the same gutter as what is along the roof edge.
