slide-outs & generator 5th wheel

Hydraulic slide-outs vs electric slide-outs....any opinions?? Also, placement of generator in bed of truck vs. front of 5th wheel which would be bedroom inside?? Helpful opinions would be appreciated!!
  • Only have had electric slides with only one problem in 20 years. A wire nut came loose at the motor connection. Took about 15 minutes to discover the problem and fix it.

Front storage Onan, very convenient (remote start), didn't disturb our sleep.

In pickup bed, chance of theft and the need to unplug to take the truck somewhere. No remote start.

After the Onan died, I bought two Honda 2000i and carry them in the truck bed but put them in the cab at night. When running we put the generators on the right side of the 5th wheel where they can be locked using a heavy cable and logging chain with two pad locks to the frame. After we are done with them for the day, I let them cool and then put them in the cab for the night.
  • I tried my 2 Honda gens in the front storage, too noisy. Works great in truck bed.
  • Like Ken, we have a genny on a very stable rack on the rear of the trailer using factory receiver (NuWa). The power entry is at the left rear of the trailer, so the connection from the generator is very short. Slides, we have had two HH'ers, both with hydraulic slides and so far, no issues. This has been a total of 18 years.

    Good Luck

  • I've had both. I had lots of problems with hydraulic. Its messy (fluid) and not every place can work on them. I waited for specialized parts from Lippert on many occasions. I now have electric (no problems so far) and it should be easy to repair? (just wires and motors) I'm sure you'll get other opinions....this is mine.
  • I have had both, electric and hydraulic. Both work well and the only trouble I have had was a broken sheer pin on an electric slide.
  • I think all of my 5ths have been electric slides. Both can give problems. I've never carried a generator in bed of truck. Guess it is ok. I had one in receiver hitch. It worked excellent and was wired in just like a factory unit.50amp cord was even ran so it was not visible. Now I have on up front. That is the best. It is very quite and will not disturb your sleeping. It;s an Onan 7000.
