Toilet Seal Troubles

My sealand toilet no longer holds water in the bowl. I have cleaned the seal area as best I can. Anything else I can do before rebuilding the toilet? How big a job is that to do? Thanks

50/50 mixture of warm vinegar and water will work to remove the mineral deposits. You may need to do it more than once. You will need to do the rubber glove, toothbrush cleaning for paper etc. first.

The SeaLand seal is neoprene made up of two pieces. You can easily replace it with a new one or remove it and clean out between the two pieces. A stop gap fix is to hold the valve open then run a stick like a Popsicle or tongue depressor carefully between the two pieces. A very small brush works too. You will eventually have to pull the seal and do it out of the toilet or replace with new

There is the possibility that the ball itself is gouged, but that seldom happens but that too is pretty easy.

The toilet does come apart pretty easily. Turn off the water, pull the front removable Velcroed on cover off, loosen the gear drive clamp then remove the china top and you have full access to all of the 'innards'.

All of this is in the SeaLand owner's manual which should be still available on the 'net if you don't have a copy.

That toilet has its foibles but is a heluva lot better the the Dometic in our new 5er

Same trouble with my 2015 Montana when we got it and the dealer would not replace the toilet because of Thetford said it needed a new base. That did not fix it. Finally Thetford sent me a new toilet with China Bowl etc. I had already bought a Dometic to replace it with. Wish you were not so far away I would give you a brand new toilet that has never been taken out of the box.

I have good luck with CLR a product for calcium lime and rust. I empty the bowl and put several ounces of CLR in the bowl. This stuff will eat the deposits. Leave it in over night. Add water the next day and you should be good to go (pun intended).

To get the SeaLand ball toilet mentioned above to work well. Push to flush then pull foot back while pedal is down letting the Pedal "snap" up. That is the way they are designed to operate.

I lived in our 5th wheel for 8 years and never rebuilt the toilet. I did take it apart and removed the rubber seal and cleaned it of the calcified water crystals. Then reinstalled the rubber seal, and no leaks. I had to do this about every 6 months or so and it took all of about 15 minutes. The toilet is in two pieces and it is held together with a large clamp, easy to seperate and see the rubber seal. Worst case the seal kit costs about $15 bucks but once apart you can see that they are easy to clean. I also would run a flat blade of the screw driver over the ball edge and also remove any rough spots.

My sealand did the same thing. I just went out and bought a new and taller (18") one.

Plumbers silicon grease is your friend.

Ours was not holding water. I put on disposable gloves and put a generous amount of Plumber's Putty, silicon grease on it.

After a couple applications over a week of applying it...no more leak.

If it's the ball type buy the "complete" rebuild kit. Don't tighten the spring cartridge too tight.

You could try cleaning the blade and seal, but it might be just as mutch work as an actual rebuild...
