torqing the lug nuts

I have a 30 ft. 2011 cougar half-ton towable and don't know what to torque the nuts at. I thought it might be 70 lbs, but when I set them at that amount the nuts don't seem to be tight enough.
  • 1/2" stud is 90 to 120 depending on aluminum or steel wheel.
eTrailer has a chart on line.
  • It wont be 70. Assuming you have 15 inch wheels and 6 lugs, it will be 95#.
  • I have towed RVs for nearly 60 years and have never torqued the wheels on any of them ever. Never had a problem. Guess I have been lucky. I am not saying you should not bother as I know you should.

Aluminum, 15 in, six lugs, so I'm thinking 90.

I have 15" 6-lug, set at 95, but 90-95 is recommended. Mine are steel.

  • Don't forget that there is a pattern to which lug nut is done first, second,... and also that the torque is done in increments. Check with the manufacture of the axles for the sequence and increments.
  • We torque our aluminum wheels every time we move. We also check the air pressure in the tires. Takes an additional 5 minutes. After a tire has been removed, aluminum wheels need to be torqued frequently until they are not loose. Something like at 10 miles, 25 miles, 50 miles, 100 miles, 150 miles. Some will be loose that long. Just a common sense safety precaution to check wheels on every moving day.
