Boondocking

I see a lot of full timers post that they spend very little time in campgrounds and spend most of the time boondocking. I find this interesting. Where do you boondock?

I don't know of a single place, near where I live, that I can boondock other than a Walmart parking lot for a few nights. I don't imagine that fulltimers are going from Walmart to Walmart.

Please open my eyes to this world of yours.
  • Wal Mart is not boondocking. Boondocking is staying in the boonies. In the West there are many gorgeous places near rivers, lakes and with beautiful vistas. It's great!
  • I think most FT do not boondock, but as far as long term boon docking goes, many use the BLM lands throughout the South west for a small fee.
  • It's very hard to find places to boondock in New England. Most boondockers head west but we've found some really great spots in the southeast and mid-west too. Take a look at this site - http://freecampsites.net/
  • No real spots in the Mass area for boondocking. If you can find someone who owns land near a lake out in the western part of the state maybe... but we have never found anything.

We do some twice a year but that is at the Races in NH.
  • Typically there's a lot more public lands for boon docking in the West than the east. Most public lands will allow it. Check out NFS (National Forest Service), BLM (Bureau Land Management), Arizona Trust lands, Some small towns, county parks offer a complimentary CG for day or two, to encourage folks to stay and spend monies in their towns.

We've read tons of blogs/websites over the years and where those individuals have commented on where they've boondocked, that's looked good to us, we've kept a note pad going on our mac, to keep adding to under states and eventually will sort down to nearest towns. It's amazing how this keeps growing and growing. Likewise we add suggested apps, websites, other tips and tricks we've picked up for so many sharing souls over the years. Idaho seems to a wonderful boon docking state for example.

Doing it this way we don't have to try and remember where did I read or see "this/that" it's already in our Useful RV Info notes that eventually we'll of course need to sort into some logical order.
  • It might be easier here in Montana than Massachusetts because of the shear amount of uninhabited Forest Service, BLM land etc...

I'll bet if you were to head to upstate New York or Maine there would be good opportunities for boon docking - kind of like the name implies you need to be in the middle of no where!!
