Ever get bored?

Plan is to go FT next May. My lovely wife is concerned about getting bored. She maintains a pretty hectic lifestyle, runs her own business and goes at warp speed most days. I think she worries about filling the hours every day. Anyone have boredom issues?

My wife would never be happy full timing. So problem solved. Honestly I don't think I would be either. 6 kids and 7 grand kids in the same area. Full timing is great for some and not so much for others. But I sure like taking some trips!

So, why do you read/post in an area for people who want to, or are, fulltiming? BTW, we know lots of people with large families who love fulltiming and have been able to give their grandkids real adventures all over the country.

Gee I am sorry. I didn't mean to offend thy true full timer. I read all the posts and comment where I please. I didn't realize that was a problem.

Frankly it is. Sometimes you just want to park on your home base for a month or 6 and live your life.

Full timing isn't really about just the travel part, it is just life where you have the option to move your home. If you want.

I think the trick for anyone (in your case your DW) is to find purpose. Without purpose, a person will become bored regardless of the lifestyle they're in.

Sounds like her current purpose is her job, all you need to do is find a suitable replacement that she can accept. Sewing, Geocache, reading, blogging, camp hosting, etc... she may not find very meaningful. Without meaning you can not have purpose.

I think traveling all the time could be boring, but there are other things she could do. Blog about the trip so friends and family can follow along, get a good camera to take pictures. Plan where to go and what to see and do. Its amazing the number of really cool things are in places we just past on by and never get to see. We like to take hikes, bird, farmers markets or street fairs, small town museums

I get bored at work. I work a Semi-stress less job. I have deadlines to make but I always get the project done early and that leaves me setting...waiting for the next assignment. I retired in the late 90's the first time and after 2 years of golf and honey dues and naps everyday ... it got to be like working without pay. I hate my job but the money is really good and the stress is low so I hang out. Bored is a personal thing, sometimes it happens and sometimes it does not... it is really up to you. TO me full timing would be great if you can afford it. Get up in the morning find that you don't want to be at this campground anymore and pack up and go someplace else. However, that is not the DW's idea of fun... so only a few days and trips a year and still working... I recommend that the OP take a few trip to test the waters and see how it goes living full time in a 300 square foot RV vs a 3000 square foot house for both of them.

I suspect that if a person has a very active mind, and is not particularly social, full timing might be a challenge. People with very active minds do not care much for "make work" jobs and hobbies. They crave accomplishment and challenging or physically active hobbies which allow measurement of accomplishment. Such as how did you golf, how far did you run today, did you find any gold in the desert, etc. But if they are sociable, they can get some mental satisfaction by being with people.

Actually, very actives minds are seldom bored because they can always think of things to do, places to see, that others will rarely find.

As to being social, we don't go out of our way to avoid people, but find that we love doing our things, our way. We spent so many years having to do cocktail/receptions/dinners/events, all along with the requisite small talk and plugs for whatever program we were raising money for, that not having to 'glad-hand' has been really a treat for us. Plus, our politics are very progressive, so we just find it easier to just do our own things. Never have had to have others' validation to feel good about ourselves.

I don't start FT for another 20 days but even just being out in the rig for a few weeks at a time I can tell you there are times we were bored. Then again there are times I am bored silly here at the house too.

That is a BIG transition ! Before going FT, I think I would try a few trips, from short (weekend) to medium (1-2 weeks).

Either you can cut it, or you can't. We did it for 3 1/2 years, and survived. Lesson learned.

With your attitude I am not surprised it didn't work out for you.

DW and I do not full time, but we are close to half time. Recently we took 2 weeks to do the approx. 450 Natchez Trace Parkway. We had several friends say aren't you going to be bored. We were not. We thought we would have plenty of time to read but we found that there were lots of things to do along the way that we did not now about.
One fun hobby that we have is geocaching. It can take you to a lot of interesting places. On this trip it took us to Alcorn State University. There was a geocache right outside of the College's historic chapel. After finding the cache we met the head of the maintenance department that gave us a personal tour of the chapel.
Have fun traveling.

I personally had to retire at 36 from my very enjoyable, high stress, constantly entertaining and very profitable career as a carrier class network designer due to a sodden & completely debilitating illness. We just sold our home and went full time. We are staying put until my husband retires. Sometimes, I do get bored & really miss my organized chaos. ๐Ÿ™‚

Being unable to even do volunteer work, I've found some ways to keep my sanity. I started sewing to keep my hands nimble. I read books on subjects I thought were interesting. I talk and have really nurtured relationships with acquaintances woo I now call friends. I learned to talk, really talk to my husband but more than that, I really listen. He's my best friends.

The perks of living in 500 sq ft is that you have no choice but to grow clods. I guess you could fall apart. The boredom is really a product of your attitude. If you think you'll be bored, you will. You'll just have to think and pursue rewarding hobbies that fill your time. Working at a park or hosting is a great idea.
