I currently have ins through my Local Sheet Metal Workers union and have 6 years before I have to worry about Medicare. I get a pension every month so not getting taxed on as much as possible would be good too.
Why is finding a domicile state different if your under 65?

If your retiring early and can keep your union insurance and it's like my union plan a BC/BS PPO good anywhere in the USA your good to relocate in any state you wish. Under Ocare not all state exchanges offer all state PPO's, which ties you to your state for anything other than emergency care. Medicare is nationwide.

Full Timing 'domicile' state use to be fairly easy.......little bit tougher now a days if still under 65 yrs old.

Under 65.......you are not using Medicare. Therefore with the NEW ACA Medical Mandated Coverage your options are maybe greater BUT also limited. If your state of 'domicile' is not participating (actual if Med. Ins. Companies are not providing) in a multi-state plan(s) then your options for coverage are limited so it's another factor one needs to consider when choosing that 'domicile' state.

One needs to weigh ALL the factors..not just no state income tax, etc.

Medicare........pick the state you want to declare as your 'domicile' (need to check on residency requirements etc.) SD, FL, TX are ones most often used by full timers.

Obamacare........then you need to really check out what plans/coverage are available by/within each state.
SD & FL at this time do not have Multi-State plans available so medical coverage is In State.......tough for a full timer that is traveling. Emergency may be covered provided policy requirements are met but routine stuff is most likely out of pocket.

  • If you plan to purchase a new RV in the near future consider which State will result in the lowest tax bill as well. We moved from a FL address to a SD address as the sales tax is only 3% vs. 6% in FL.
  • Spending time in FL is why we make FL our legal residence. No State income taxes. We also like getting truck and 5th wheel plates that are good for 2 yrs. We use the Good Sam Florida mail service as our full time address.
  • SD,TX,and FL are the three most popular states for full timers to use as a legal domicile.

Take a look HERE for some good info on SD. One thing to consider is jury duty. Sioux Falls SD (Minnehaha county)will excuse you from jury duty if you full time.

So will the county in TX where the Escapees mail forwarding service and RV organization is located
  • South Dakota, FL, TX. See Escapee club. For FL we use CW Presidents club for mail.
  • Any place you want you can live. The three most popular are South Dakota, Florida and Texas. When I full timed, I chose South Dakota because of cheaper vehicle insurance and registrations, no vehicle inspections, and ease of obtaining a driver's license and insurance. I found a mail forwarding firm that was flawless and referred me to banking, insurance, vehicle registration and drivers licensing. Alternative Resources at www.alternativeresources.net was my choice and I never regretted me decision.
