1999 Fleetwood Discovery Class A Overheated

On a trip from Jackson Hole WY, fan belt broke and we overheated. I stopped the MH and let it cool down, not knowing the fan belt shredded. My wife pulled into parking lot and stayed. we could not get the motor home to move any distance, and was vibrating and shaking. We called for a tow, since we were only 45 miles from our home in So. California and it was late Saturday night. The tow came Sunday evening.

Now here is my dilemma, I was told that I have a cracked manifold which I replaced with the fan belt. I had oil and filter changed with Shell Rotella 10-40. Still the same problem, the MH will not move when I step on gas pedal and is still bouncing when in neutral but not as bad as I think the oil change made some difference. I called a truck mechanic and explain every thing he said change fuel filters.

What do you think or suggest
  • I would change the fuel filters as he suggested. And go from there. Although I don't know what overheating has to do with the filters.

Brett Wolfe is a good diesel man. Maybe he will read and chime in.
  • I would say that you have plugged up fuel filters. My coach acted that way in Wyoming when I got a batch of bad fuel plugging up the fuel filters. Had them changed and the vibrating engine stopped and run good the rest of the way.
  • Please tell us what engine you have. That will make suggestions a lot more relevant.

But, as already posted, anytime you have a performance issue with a diesel, new fuel filters is the inexpensive, easy first step.
  • We need a better description of your problem. The engine runs OK now? That is, it starts fine, idles, revs up when you press the gas pedal? But put it in gear and it doesn't move? Engine revs up? Or does the engine bog down? What "bounces" in neutral?

And right, what engine? 1999 Discovery would be a diesel pusher, correct?

A 1999 Discovery has the Cummins ISB 275 HP engine in it with the Allison 3000MH transmission.

Getting a manifold crack is common. I never have had mine bounce up and down at idle. So at a loss with that.
  • Uneven idle is often caused by a leak on the suction side of the fuel system allowing air into the system.
  • Cummins 5.9 Fleetwood Discovery Diesel. Have error message 0374 I am told the VP 44 pump controller has to be serviced. Where do I go and what is the cost.

Already had the fan belt replaced, replaced cracked manifold, and the third mechanic came out and said its pump controller. I already have spent over $1200., with no positive results.

The last guy said take it to cummins. How should I handle this, its hard money
  • It is now at Cummins to be analized. Thats another $200, to have it analyzed and if it winds up being pump controller , thatis about $3000.
