1st timer--need advice

Hi All. Am considering buying a1986 Beaver Marquis 36 with Detroit Diesel 8.2 turbo from a friend of my Dad's. 76k miles. Seems to be in decent shape, however it has been sitting for over 8 years. Needs main battery, tires and a good interior cleanse. It is loaded. Any comments? Stay or run away? Great engine? Anything will help. I am totally new to this and will appreciate anyone's input.. Thank you.
  • I'd avoid this deal strictly because of the GM/Detroit Fuel Pincher 8.2 turbo diesel. I had a fleet which had a number of trucks with that engine. Blown head gaskets were a very normal occurrence because of the basic design of that engine. Most engines have at least five head bolts around each cylinder, the 8.2 has only four and they do not provide sufficient clamping pressure in a turbo charged situation. The manufacturer installed larger head bolts in an attempt to resolve the blown head gasket problem but it was insufficient, the problem persisted. Our non-turbo 8.2's did not experience the same problems. And yes, it/they are a bit underpowered depending on the load they are asked to carry.
  • In my opinion the worst you can do to a motorhome is to not use it. In my opinion you can expect a lot of problems with a coach that has not been used for that many years;) Also the 8.2 Detroit was a good engine to stay away from as they were very troublesome and lacked power.
