I did the exact same with our 2003 Explorer that we still currently tow. I too was very fortunate to have someone at the local Ford dealership that could "flash" the ECM for me. Same charge - $45.00. However, I had "Bill" not a "Roy" do it.;)

We purchased a new 2015 F-150 4x4 because they are towable four down by electronically shifting the transfercase into neutral. It also adds the ability to haul our motorcycle when towing.

One thing not in our Ford manual was the need to set the antitheft sensors to "peripheral only". We didn't and we couldn't figure out how to turn the alarm off. Had to wait and call Ford in the morning. They insisted it was in the manual, so we asked what page? It wasn't where they said. My DW made up a nifty checklist to go through when enabling neutral tow.

We looked at the 2014 Explorers when we were shopping for a replacement of the 2002. Really nice!

Any idea why the NTK isn't needed on the '14?

You don't say which model Explorer you have. We towed an 08 for six years and now tow a 2014. You need to have the four wheel drive model and as said you need the neutral tow kit. I think I paid $70 for the install on our 08. the 2014 does not need the NTK.

You could upgrade to a 2011, from what I've read they are towable with less work. But do your homework to be sure, this is just after a quick search.

Had one of our local Ford garages put on the NTK. (Not all garages will. The other Ford dealership in the area declined.)

The RV dealership (Colton RV) installed the base plate and ran the wiring for electrical stuff.

GM and JM so all you had to add was the neutral tow kit and then the base plate etc. Nothing additional to make sure the transmission didn't burn up? And where did you have your work done?

Are you talking about a neutral tow kit? We had to have one put on our 2002 Exploder so we could tow it four down.

NTK not for AWD

(EDIT: Keep in mind that your vehicle is a much newer model.)

After a problem with the transfer case, we did get a 2014 CR-V as a replacement.. 2015 CR-Vs are not towable four down.
