40 class a on highway 12 in Utah?

I have been reading about Highway 12 in Utah. I have a 40 ft phaeton pulling a Jeep. What is this road like? Is it large enough for a motorhome this size.

Thanks

Ken
  • Very pretty country...we did it two years ago with our rig and would do it again if the opportunity presents itself....Dennis
  • One of the most scenic drives in the lower 48. I go out of my way to use 12. Enjoy the ride. You ain't got nothing like it in Tennessee. I guaranty you won't forget the ride or the view.
  • We've done Hwy 12 many times from both directions with our 40' motorhome. We absolutely love it. We have found places to pull over.

Here we go again folks. Put the popcorn in the microwave. Hey OP, not trying to be a hole here. Please do a search on Utah 12. Heck, just do an advanced search on my screen name. I've commented on this road for years including just in the last week or so.

Yes, there is one short stretch without guard rails where you can make an ugly splat way down the mesa but don't think guard rails will stop a 40 footer anyway. My issue with this road is that there are no pull offs in the narrowest section to take pictures! It is on of the most beautiful roads in the Southwest. If you or spouse are extremely scared of exposure, just don't do it. Otherwise, it will just blow you socks off.

Just took this road east from grand canyon north rim and then on to 24. It truly is gorgeous. You will be going slow and I would call it fairly hairy but if mountain driving doesn't bother you, you and your rig should be fine. JMHO
  • You can check our blog where we took 56 pictures of the trip from Kodachrome Basin SP to Torrey, UT in 2011. That particular posting is found here. We made the trip in our 40 footer pulling the Jeep and had no problems whatsoever - the DW took all the pictures enroute!

  • It will be a very busy road on August 5. It is part of a Bicycle route this year. As stated you will have not issues on it.
