Air Conditioner Performance

I had a problem with my AC units not being sealed properly with the AC ducts. They were blowing some of the cold air up in to the "attic" roof structure rather than in to the living area. I pulled the inside covers off of the AC units and then used the aluminum duct tape and duct seal to make sure that all cold air went where it was supposed to and this made a big difference in the interior comfort. You might check your units.

depending on the heat, humidity, how clean the filters are, etc your AC’s may have a hard time keeping up. here are sone tips:

- start the AC early: get an early start by running the AC before the heat of the day begins.

- slide outs: bring in all slide out rooms. the less sq. feet you have to cool the easier it will be to keep cool.

- fans. cold air sinks. use a fan to move the cold air around.

- keep the rear of the RV closed off from the front again reducing the amount of sq. feet each AC has to cool.

- keep your filters clean.

- in a motor home the windshield will act like a radiator. it will absorb and radiate heat into the interior of the MH. tyou can address this by:
- parking your MH facing north or east.

- using a commercially available sun screen on the exterior of the windshield. these screens block up to 95% of the heat but still allow you to see out during the day.

- use a commercially available product sometimes called “Reflectix”, basically insulated aluminum foil. it is designed to be used on the interio of the windshield. it is very effective at blocking heat but you cannot see through it. the result is perpetual night inside the MH but it is a lot less costly than an exterior sun screen.

- the other windows will act the same way as the windshield but to a lesser extent. keep the shades down or use externally mounted awnings over those windows.

in our 33- yrs of RVing we have learned that by doing all of the above we can keep tge interior of our 40’ MH cool and pleasant. we used the Reflectix at first but did not like the perpetual darkness. we switched to an external sun screen and found that it works nearly as well. ours is mfg by MagneShade.

Good advice. But this is what I used and it was a bear to get off. Maybe I should have used the spray on....:W....Dennis

I also recommend an external windshield screen. We have the Magneshade and they work very well.

Not sure if this helps, but we are in Colorado and have issues with the sun beating down at the high altitudes so we bought a roll of the thin insulation from Lowe's and cut it to the windshield and put it in for storage and camping. When we visit the southeast and the high heat/humidity, we still use it. It makes a HUGE difference. And we have three 15k A/C's.....and still use the shade. In the southeast, summer, almost 100 degrees....you can hang meat in our coach.

Just for your info. The REAR is a 13,500 BTU They do not make a 12,500 BTU. 37 foot units need 2- 15K AC units for Texas heat. That extra 1500 BTU will do wonders in Texas Heat. Doug

We put Reflexit on all exterior walls inside the cabinets and closets. It makes a big difference in the inside temps.
