Air Conditioners for a 1989 Ford Jamboree

Dash air is run off the motor and only comes out the dash vents. The overhead air only works on 110V either when plugged in or from the generator. If it doesn’t work when plugged in then it has issues. Same goes for the dash AC. If it hasn’t already been done it (dash air) needs to be converted to R134A. Either way they probably won’t be cheap fixes!

No they are not connected together.
Dash air may need any of several items. Could just need recharged.
Roof air will most likely need to be replaced. Not many places will work on them.

As others have said - dash air is totally separate from overhead air unit. The dash air repair would require conversion - expensive at Ford dealer. A phone call to Ford dealer should give you better info. The overhead unit is likely cheaper fix - in many cases you just need to replace the upper portion of the air conditioner ... those sell for about $500? Replacement of the upper isn't very hard but will require you to be capable of heavy lifting .. you will also need to replace the gasket which is inexpensive.

I own a 91 and my dash air went out many yrs ago ... but I live in NW and rarely need dash air ... when I travel to warm areas I run the overhead air using the onboard generator.

Depending on what's not working on the roof air conditioner, it might be something pretty simple and inexpensive to fix: a faulty thermostat (or connection, if external), a motor capacitor, cleaning, etc. It could also be something more major, of course; at its age, all bets are off.
