Air Step solenoid issue with Monaco Dynasty.

Question

We have a 1998 Monaco Dynasty with a front floor that extends over the stairwell so the passenger has a place to put their foot. The other day, the floor extended on its own and won't retract, so I have to use a ladder to get in and out of the coach!  Not fun.  Usually when I turn the key on, I hear a click and a hiss of air when it extends, but now all is quite. I checked the fuse and its fine.  Seems I had this problem years ago  and suspect that part I ordered is again failed. Its a little blue square with three air lines coming into it and two electrical wires.  I believe its the solinoid that controls the floor going in and out using air pressure (no motor) Its made by MAC,  model number 45A-AA@-DFEA-1BA.  Can't figure out what else it can be. I still have to check for 12 volts on those two wires going to it before I order this part.  The part is quite common for about $90 (an air -step -solenoid  Has anybody else had a situation like this? Some folks have had good luck removing and cleaning them. If you disconnect the line going to the cylinder you should be able to push the step in.

Be careful changing that solenoid. Removing that 1/4 air line lets your coach drop like a rock. Only change it from above unless you block your coach. It's easy to reach through the generator compartment. I was shocked at how fast the coach dropped when I changed mine. You do know there are two switches that control that cover, yes? One on the driver's side which is the main and one on the passenger's side that is the slave. Driver's side must be ON for the passenger side to function. Check both for loose/broken wires.....Dennis

Thanks for the info.  I tested the voltage on the two wires going to the air step solenoid yesterday and didn't get anything. Can't figure out why. I tried testing voltage with the ignition on and off, also we have two toggle switches in he coach to extend the floor and I put those in different positions as well and re-tested. Seems it should have 12 volts going to the part.  The part says 12 volt and also 2.4 watts.  Any ideas on when those wires should have current?  What's strange is that the part seems to have broken just sitting there (I am use to RV's breaking like that!) I slid the RV out of our RV garage, lubricated the underside, then when I went to put it back in the step floor had extended.  I checked to make sure I didn't pull a wire loose underneath and all looked normal.

Thanks for the alert on the coach dropping.  I was checking it out from underneath but did see that I could access it from the open generator compartment.

Problem solved. I got off easy.  When I noticed no 12 volt power going to the solenoid, I checked both door retraction switches in the coach, one for the driver, one for the passenger. The hot wire had vibrated loose off the switch connection for the passenger toggle switch and was hanging there in mid air. Hooked it up, floor retracted perfectly.  Saved $90. . . . .this time.
